The polls that I saw show that American trust Dems on immigration more than they do Republicans. However, Americans tend to trust Republican more than Dems on Security issues.

So, if they can make immigration into a security issue, they can potentially win on it. Putting the video of the marchers tearing down the gate in Mexico on constant loop has probably helped.
