looks like it was bigger than the ou sign. I saw the sign and thought it was pretty impressive. It never stops...the bias that is.

A large, engraved metal OSU sign erected on the newest boathouse along the Oklahoma River is being taken down this week following notification by Oklahoma City that it did not comply with city codes and was put up without a permit.

The sign, more than 100 square feet in size, was attached Aug. 20 to the east facade of the newly christened Oklahoma State University Kayak Boathouse. The sign, far bigger than those for other boathouses tied to the University of Central Oklahoma and Oklahoma City University, made OSU the only university with visibility to nearby Interstate 35.

The sign also was bigger than one for the University of Oklahoma boathouse that is located further west along the Oklahoma River.

City Planning Director Aubrey Hammontree said Monday the sign was put up without a permit and the Boathouse Foundation was notified the weekend it went up that it couldn’t stay without a permit.

“It’s a complicated issue ” Hammontree said. “They will need to go through the scenic river review committee, and they have been pretty focused on signs. They may have to see if they can rezone the area ”

OSU sponsored the new boathouse as part of a new swift water rescue training program it is starting at the adjoining RiverSport Rapids.

Elizabeth Laurent, Boathouse Foundation spokeswoman, said Monday the sign was put up with the intention of being a temporary display.

Laurent acknowledged not all of the public response to the sign was positive. She said the sign was donated by architect Rand Elliott and contractor Stan Lingo — both OSU graduates. The sign was met with some criticism on social media, including those with ties to OU.

“OSU was granted the opportunity to identify the building as the location for the program as part of our partnership” Laurent said. “The current sign on the building was erected on a temporary basis as a backdrop for the official announcement. … A permanent design consistent with city guidelines as well as the character of the Oklahoma City Boathouse District will be developed ”
