OSU Out-of-State admissions question

Has anyone had any luck having their out of state tuition waived at OSU?

Here's what I have going on. My daughter is a Senior this year and we toured OSU a few weeks ago. It's by far her number one choice but the out of state tuition is a little over the top. We can send her to Univ of Washington for about the same amount. She already qualifies for the top level academic scholarship but you can't combine a legacy scholarship with an academic scholarship (which I find ridiculous).

My wife and I, as well as our parents are all OSU alumni. We were all born in Okla and my wife and I spent over 10 years paying Okla state taxes before being transferred out of state with our govt/military jobs. Both of our families have been there since statehood, mine did the land run and hers did the trail of tears. I'm not sure if any of that matters but we are attempting to get the out of state tuition waved.

Does anyone have any advice or success stories?

My first year I received an alumni out-of-state tuition waiver. But, my second year that changed and it was "only" $3750 a year. Getting it waived, at the time in '05, seemed like a huge hassle and I had received more scholarship money elsewhere, so I didn't put any effort in pursuing it.

But, it really did seem like it was a hassle. A ton of paperwork and I distinctly remember the lady in the office who was helping me said these are generally denied.

This is what I'll plan on doing if any of my kids are hooked on OSU halfway through high school. Although a HS diploma from Missouri and a permanent address in Edmond may look fishy.

you moved almost a year ago. You let the kid stay with close family friends to finish their senior year.

I had the ability to try that, but I remember them asking for official proof of residence: utility bills, vehicle registrations, etc. I don't know what the reasoning for that was, but I would assume to help prevent the cracks you folks are suggesting.

Isn't the top academic out of state scholarship like 50k over 4 years? What's the difference in tuition between in state and out of state? I ask because I guess I'm surprised that it could be more than 50k difference over 4 years. But what do I know?

I think it's like 15-16k a year man. I'd look it up and give you more accurate info but I don't care enough. Rape is rape, just grab the whistle.

Just back when I started at OSU, in-state tuition hours were something like $180 per credit hour. Out-of-state was around $400.

Both of my kids graduated from OSU in the last 2 years and with the legacy scholarship of $5,000/year with a gpa above 3.0, it still came to over $8,000 (rounding off) per semester. The only way they were allowed to go, even with the legacy scholarship, was to go to a local juco for at least one year. Thankfully we saved early in our marriage and throughout the years to be able to pay for it.

Thor is absolutely right, although I love OSU, I felt it was really over priced.

When I was there 1982-1987, my last tuition statement for out of state was around $1,700. That $1,700 in 1987 is equivalent to $3,600 today. A far cry from $8,000.

Thanks for the responses everyone. OSU Out-of-state tuition is $21,000 and In-State is only $7,800. The highest level academic is $12,500 and the Legacy Scholarship is $5000 per year each, you just cant combine them. So total tuition, room, meal plan, and books we are looking at over $34,000 (about 21,500 after her academic scolly) a year for my daughter to attend OSU. I was really hoping she could experience OSU since she bleeds orange (naturally) and I think the Oklahoma State environment would be extremely beneficial to her. But for that price I will be sending her to Univ. of Washington which is ranked very high for her desired major.

After reading some of the comments and hearing from other OSU Alumni is the same boat I'm expecting to get our out-of state waiver denied.

I've got 13 years to go before my first will be in college... so I hope some things change by then, and not just tuition prices skyrocketing... Just cant stand the thought of my kids wanting to go to Mizzou. We may have to move across the river at some point just to get in-state tuition for KU or K-State.

Hope this helps. From that state:

Resident status for the purposes of calculating tuition is complex. Institutions in the Oklahoma State System of Higher Education are responsible for determining resident status based upon Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education policy, interviews and documentation provided.

A resident of Oklahoma is someone who has lived in the state continuously for at least 12 months and whose domicile is in Oklahoma. It is the place where he or she intends to remain.

Domicile has two components – residence and intention to remain. Attendance at an educational institution is interpreted as temporary residence. Therefore, a student neither gains nor loses residence status solely by such attendance. A nonresident student attending an Oklahoma college or university on more than a half-time basis is presumed to be in the state primarily for educational purposes.

The burden of proof of establishing Oklahoma residence or domicile, including providing any supporting documentation, shall be upon the applicant. Since residence or domicile is a matter of intent, each case will be judged on its own merit by the appropriate institutional official(s) consistent with this policy.

Students attending an Oklahoma college or university may perform objective acts, some of which are required by law (i.e. payment of taxes), and all of which are customarily done by some nonresidents who do not intend to remain in Oklahoma after graduation, but are situationally necessary and/or convenient (i.e. registering to vote, obtaining a driver's license). Such acts and/or declarations alone are not sufficient evidence of intent to remain in Oklahoma beyond the college experience.

That tracks with what we are seeing this year for our daughter. There are other scholarships she can apply for as well. Our daughter was awarded one from the Houston Alumni Association.
