On this day in 1957, the Civil Rights Act was signed into law by Republican Dwight Eisenhower. It was opposed by 125 Democrat legislators, but Republicans had more than enough votes to pass it. To stop its passage, Democrats staged the longest one person filibuster in our history with Strom Thurmond speaking for 24 hours & 18 minutes against it.

So all Republicans magically became racist at some point while all Democrats magically became non-racist?

Which party are neonazis and white nationalists voting for? Be it magic or whatnot, the parties aren’t the same ideologies as before anymore. despite dumbass revisionist history: “the Democrats started the KKK” type tripe.

Hmm? No, I'd guess most politicians were pretty racist in the 50's, and I bet there are a few running around now on both sides of the aisle. But, all I was saying is history and politics is pretty much a never ending battle between Conservatism and Liberalism. The names on the parties change, but the battle doesn't.

I just never understood using something a party did 60, 90, 150 years ago as any evidence of a party's politics, good or bad. Platforms, demographics, etc... change too much.

So, in your opinion it's dumb to claim that today's Democrats are racist for strongly opposing civil rights back in 1957. I thoroughly agree with that.

Do you think it's at least equally as dumb to claim that Republicans are racist just because Democrats say so?

Do I think it's dumb to call someone a racist just because they are a Republican? Yes.

It's always about the "narrative" or "tragedy" - same shit:

The democrats didn't stop in 1957, 19 southern democrat Senators, including Robert KKK Byrd, William Fulbright, and Al Gore Sr., also filibustered the 1964 Civil Rights Act. LBJ needed GOP Senators to pass it.

What’s your take on trump’s transgender military ban? Can’t have it both ways, as the party in power is very much reversing the trends.

They Dems use less obvious tactics these days.

You think Republicans are progressing civil rights these days? I’m all ears lol...cuz I’ve got plenty to throw back at ya...

Your idea of progressing civil rights is throwing money at something. Truly progressing civil rights is about helping people help themselves. There are TONS of minorities that come to this country with nothing and in a generation are amassing wealth and sending their kids to college. Why? Because they haven’t spent decades hearing how there is no hope, because the man just wants to keep them down. Years and years of social programs and we have generational welfare.

Are there racists? Of course (and it goes in all directions) is it worse than ever? No. That’s absurd. We just elected a black president twice. I’m sorry but a systemically racist society would not allow that. That’s another thing that chaps me. “Systemic racism”. Do you idiots even know what systemic means? If you do then I dare you to show me examples of where it exists.

As far as transgendered military ... I’m sorry you couldn’t get in ... after your boob job.

Do you need a list of examples? I don’t have that much time, cuz that list is long...and you know it.

Denial...then acceptance.

So you can’t. As I suspected. Since when do you not have the time to do anything?

Again I’ll grant you there are examples of racism out there. There are some truly heinous people out there (of all shapes and stripes) but society is not engaged in any “systemic” oppression or racism. It’s ILLEGAL!

And yes you can point to the shootings. Then I’ll point you to the southern white cop that picked up the black kid walking 20 miles to get to a job, because he didn’t have a car. He bought him breakfast and took him to the job site. If any place should be “systemically” racist, it should be the south right?

This is where you and your kind lose. You hyperbolize everything to the point of ridiculousness and only point to the worst examples. This country is better for minorities than it has ever been and it will only keep getting better.

You can’t prove me wrong.

Is it long within the context of total contacts that the police make each year? Is the number of total contacts even a definable length?
