The police car contracts were the primary reason Ford didn't need the bailout given to Chrysler and GM back in 2009, if memory serves.

When I hung out at Ford Ranger in St. Paul, Taurus-Sable in Atlanta, Ram-Caravan in St. Louis, Diamond Star in Normal, Intrepid-Vision-Concord in Brampton, Neon in Belvidere, I'm so relieved to learn those plants didn't build police cars.

Not really. Ford didn't need the bailout because they sold Hertz and Land Rover in mega-LBO deals to offload billions in debt.

I worked at Hertz back in '05 or '06 when it was sold to the Carlyle group in a 14B LBO (12.5B in Ford debt + 1.5B in cash). Its the only reason I actually know much about it.

Talk about cutting off their nose to spite their face! Ford management should tell them “okay, we’ll stop producing cop cars, we’ll just have to shut down two production lines at each plant!” I bet that would stop that kinda talk really fast!

Fact is, these guys are union. If this was something that mattered so deeply to the employees, they should have negotiated it into their labor contract when it was last renewed. But if it wasn't, then sit down, shut up, and do what you agreed by contract to do.
