The Oklahoman
Oklahoma State’s Micaela Wark stopped short of home plate and reached out with her right foot to gently tap it before celebratory helmet slaps rained down on her.
Wark, who suffered a knee injury during a home run celebration that resulted in surgery last summer, wasn’t taking any chances in the fourth-ranked Cowgirls’ season-opening win over No. 9 Florida State, 9-6 in the Puerto Vallarta College Classic on Thursday in Mexico.
A few Cowgirl newcomers had impressive debuts as well.
Center fielder Megan Delgadillo went 3 for 4 and stole four bases from the leadoff spot. Catcher Amanda Hasler gave a mini-bat flip after her no-doubt home run in the sixth inning, which provided one of her two RBIs.
Starting pitcher Ruby Meylan struck out nine Florida State hitters, including six straight at one point. She gave up two runs on five hits over five innings, though her replacement newcomer RyLee Crandall, gave up four runs on two walks and two home runs in the seventh inning.
Delgadillo’s speed was on display from her first at-bat. She slapped a grounder up the middle that went off the glove of a diving second baseman and trickled onto the outfield grass. Delgadillo never stopped and slid into second with a leadoff double.
She scored moments later on an infield error, one of three for FSU in the game. And Hasler came in on a single by Wark for a 2-0 OSU advantage.
Junior third baseman Tallen Edwards hit the first home run of the Cowgirl season, a solo shot in the second inning for a 3-0 lead.
From there, Meylan kept FSU at a distance before the offense added another run in the fourth, two in the fifth and three in the sixth for plenty of cushion.
The Cowgirls (1-0) will be back in action Friday with back-to-back games against Louisiana Tech and Northern Colorado, at 4 and 7 p.m., respectively.
