I've never experienced this before so please forgive my ignorance. I received a debit card today from Square that I definitely did not sign up for. I had a Square business account 7 or 8 years ago when I had my nutrition place, but once I sold I never used it again. I couldn't tell you if I closed the Square account or not. But the debit card I received has my first & last name, and a chip with the company name LacyDH LLC on it. I am not really sure what to do. I Googled this, and it seems this has happened to a lot of people. I am worried about someone stealing my SSN and other information to open this account and do God knows what with. I have sent an email to Square and plan to call first thing in the morning to have the account closed.
I currently have a free account with Experian which I check monthly, and everything seems to be fine there. Credit score is normal, doesn't show any new open accounts or inquiries into my credit. I did do a privacy scan, which showed my email, phone number, and SSN had shown up on the dark web at some point in the last few years (SSN was the only one that didn't show a date). Obviously, I am super worried about my information and identity theft. I have been getting a ton of phone calls/text messages lately regarding requesting health insurance coverage, which I didn't request. I did read an article how scammers can use your identity to file a fraudulent tax returns (I haven't filed yet this year) or obtain health insurance, so given the recent calls/texts I have received, I am a little freaked out that might be what is happening here. What other steps do I need to take? I read something about putting fraud alert on through Experian, or putting a credit freeze on (I know nothing about these or how they work). Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank You!
Edit: Did some digging and remembered that I received a letter from MidFirst in the fall that they had a data breach and my information was compromised (name, address, SSN, email). They offered a free 24 month membership through OnAlert, which I signed up for. Upon signing in to the account, I can see that my SSN was compromised in January of 2023.
