When the term "hero" gets thrown out so commonly in today's world, it's important we acknowledge the REAL heroes of this world.
Fire Controlman 1st Class Gary Leo Rehm Jr., dove into a flooded compartment aboard the USS Fitzgerald and rescued some 16 sailors. He lost his life when he insisted on trying to retrieve another 6 who were trapped below and the ship began taking on so much water, they had to close the hatch behind him.

Unfortunately, there's no Navy Cross or perhaps even a MOH in store for him as a posthumous tribute as his deeds did not occur in combat. Everything he did was at least as commendable as performing under fire in a combat situation. He knew the risks and there's at least 16 people alive today due to his selflessness.
