I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but this new variant is kind of convenient. The only way to slow inflation normally would be to raise interest rates and slow the capital markets. But that type of economic slowdown is slow to implement, easy to oversteer, and can be directly blamed back on the government. Just look at 2018. The Fed jacked rates 5 times on Trump, then figured out they they brought the markets and economy to a halt and then had to figure out how to reopen the spiggot. But the economic damage was a significant contributor to the results of the mid-term elections. Now look at the Fed today. They know they were 6 months (at least) behind on tapering, and know they're figuring out that they are behind the curve when it comes to raising rates. So bring on another, more dangerous, covid outbreak. While interest rate moves matter more for large capital, COVID has given the government the ability to directly influence consumer spending. We know from last year, that lockdowns can directly impact consumer demand which is deflationary. And clearly the market agrees. Just the initial discussion led the market nearly 1000 points lower. And the stocks leading everything lower were commodities, which are the most tied to inflation.
Again, I'm not proposing this is what's occurring. Just noting the obvious political conveniences that a new variant brings.
