We are really wrestling well going into NCAA tournament. Penn State will be tough to beat, but I see us with 6-7 AA. Funny things happen in March, but the last several years we have wrestled well and I am hoping for the same this year. My predictions

125 - AA 5-8
133 - 3-2 maybe round 12
141 - Finals and hopefully champ. Weight is tough - I think he wins but when you are in close matches, anything can happen
149 - AA 3-5 - I think he has a shot to beat Sorenson, so hoping he is on the bottom of the bracket. Rutherford will be tough to beat.
157 - top 4 - Martinez and Nolf are the top 2 seeds. I think Joe will have a plan for which ever he wrestles. Smith is probably 4-6 seed and not sure who he matches up better with.
165 - Champ - hopefully opponents will wrestle, but I am guessing most will just try to keep away and he will end up with frustrating matches like Big XII finals.
174 - AA - Hard to predict where he ends up as it could be anywhere between 1-8, but I am guessing 4-8 range
184 - AA - talk about putting everything together. I see him in top 4
197 - hoping 3-2, maybe round if 12 if everything goes well
285- AA - probably in 4-8 range

That would be 8 AA, which is possible, but as I said, funny things happen in March. We need bonus points in early rounds and everyone to wrestle above seeds (with Heil and Derringer winning as 1 seeds) and we have a chance. Brackets will determine when we match up with other contenders. Should be a great tournament.

I was thinking about doing one of these so I'll put it here.

125 - Interesting to see how much seed he cost himself today, but regardless he will be somewhere 5-8 and that will be fine. He has beaten all those guys and I don't see any of the top 4 getting upset. I'll say 5-6 and hope he avoids Milhoff.
133 - I hope he is healthy. He was game this weekend, but looked a little off. He'll get on the board, but I agree with rocco, R12 is probably the best he can do.
141 - Quarters, semis and finals will all be high wire acts, but I like his chances to get it done. Champ
149 - I think Sorenson is a bad match-up for AC, but Retherford obviously is as well. I'm a little more conservative here, though, I'll go 3-8. He could get 3rd, but any AA level wrestler is going to be a threat to him.
157 - As much as it doesn't make sense, it is very likely that IMar and Nolf will not be 1-2 as Gantt is undefeated. We've seen this from the NCAA before. This means Smith needs to get the 5 seed to avoid those two and match-up with a concussed Ian Miller (should be healthy by then) in the quarters. If he is 6 or 7 (which is likely, I think) he gets Nolf or IMar. While he could pull an upset there, he may be on the back before the semis. I think 3-6 makes sense given how nasty this bracket is (Gantt, IMar, Nolf, Miller, Palacio, Brascetta...)
165 - Champ. Should face Ian Jordan in the finals. Its going to be hard to say good bye.
174 - I will say this, I hope I'm wrong, but I've got Rogers missing AA status. Obviously, he could beat anyone out there, but at NCAAs, where guys are all scouted and well prepared (1 match per session on the front side) I think a lot of guys will stay away from him. He'll beat some of those, but I don't know if he can beat enough of them. He may have the widest range of anyone in the tournament because I wouldn't be all that surprised to see him in the semis, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him out early either. We need a big run from him to have any shot as a team.
184 - The sky is the limit here. Talk about a guy peaking at the right time. I'll go 1-6 simply because I'm still amazed at what I'm seeing from Boyd and can't fully believe it. If he wrestles as he has been he will be right there, competing with the top guys. Another guy that could really help our title chances with a deep run. Just be careful because if he gets on the 8/9 line he'll see Dean in the quarters. Could beat him again, but could fall there. I'd rather he was 10/11 than 8/9. Really tough weight to seed so I have no idea where to expect him.
197 - Probably still going into the tournament unseeded so draw is huge. If he gets a seeded guy without high octane offense, he has a chance. Probably a 2-2 guy, but will be a tough out.
285 - 5-8. Not beating Snyder, Gwiz, Coon and Walz. I like his performance much better than last year going into tournament time, though, so I think the 5/6 match is very likely.

When you have a best case scenario where 141, 157, 165, 174 and 184 are wrestling on Saturday night (unlikely, sure, but not impossible) with 125, 149 and 285 on the podium, you have a chance. We can't afford any letdowns and need some guys to over perform, but we're in it. I want to go sit in my seat at MSG right now to get ready. LET'S GO POKES!

125- Kilmara 5-8
133- Harding any wins help
141-Heil Champ, always in close matches so he could get upset though
149-Collica 3-6
157-Smith Champ, Martinez did not look like all that yesterday, but upset Nolf today, Smith family been doing big things in Wrestling for decades.
165-Deiringer Champ, Key is getting as many bonus points as possible.
174-Rogers 5-8 and 2-3 pins
184-Boyd- Champ, why not he is wrestling as well as anyone right now
197-Wiegel any wins help
285-Marsden 5-8

So 8 All Americans and 4 Champs, probably biased towards what I want to see, but realistic.

I like our chances to score well at 141, 149, 157, 165, and 184. I don't expect Heil to beat Mckenna a third time but he could make the finals. I think Collica and Boyd are wrestling the best on the team at the moment and I like their chances to make the top 4. AD needs to quit getting frustrated at the guys running from him and just take the points and move on. Joe looked very strong at the Big 12s and he has a chance to be anywhere from 1 to 6. His few weeks off may be a blessing as it kept him from hitting that freshman wall that many of them collide with late in the season.

Boyd seems to be really turning the corner His old high school coach thinks he can get even better

I wrote this a few weeks ago, but updated a little with the Big Twelve results.

125 - Klimara- Probable AA. It'd be his to lose, put it that way. That weight is just so stacked. I think he has a better shot of placing than OU's Millhof. Ryan just seems to have his number of late. But both are pretty good bets.
133 - GWH - 3-2 at the tournament. Possibly 4-2 based on where he falls in the bracket, but nothing past a quarterfinal round.
141 - Heil - Finalist, likely champion.
149 - Collica - Man, I love the way he and GWH are wrestling of late. Collica's either ousted the round prior to AA, or he's in. But he's definitely got the best upside of those who are dark horses for AA status on this team. He's the hottest wrestler on the planet, my money says AA.
157 - Smith - Joe's a semifinalist, or better. If healthy. And that's the key. Anyone have any word on how Joe looked during the Big Twelve tournament? Did he favor any thing? I'll say this, there's no better single opponent preparer than John Smith. He finds the other guy's weakness and gets his guys to attack it. Especially after having already lost to an opponent. See Chris Perry v. Andrew Howe for proof.
165 - Dieringer - My only fear of Dieringer is that when he's on top of the podium for his third NCAA title, he'll strip off his human clothing and reveal that he's really a Cyborg/Predator/Alien clone that was the result of a bizarre lab experiment conducted in a secret basement beneath the wresting room in Gallagher Hall. If my hypothesis is correct, be wary when you shake his hand as his sweat is probably a form of hydrochloric acid and neutron bomb remnants left over from the Cold War. My money is on that specific scenario more than it is any scenario you can concoct that has him losing.
174 - Chandler Roger's your wild card. He might AA, or lose two straight. I'll leave it to you savvy people who know OSU wrestling better than I to make the prediction here. Which leaves oberebo out of the discussion.
184 - Boyd - My upset special (outside of Stillwater). AA, as high as fifth.
197 - Dieringer - Unless you show me a rule that specifically forbids a wrestler to enter at two weights, this is still your best shot. Weigel will win a few, but won't place.
285 - Marsden - Anywhere in the top four. Possible finalist depending on draw and if continues to wrestle more aggressively, as he has lately.

That's not enough to upset the Penn State apple cart, but it's good enough for a top three finish. Man, for all the reasons already stated elsewhere, OSU is going to miss Kaid Brock this tournament. With him, it would likely be one of the best and closest team title races at the NCAA tournament in a long time.

In case you're interested in how OU's doing:

125 - Last year, freshman Ryan Millhof took 4th out of four. This year, he is a sophomore and the Big Twelve Champion, beating the OSU's 7th ranked and returning All-American Eddie Klimara for the second straight time after losing to him approximately 1,458 straight times. Great job by all the coaches, including former OU great Sam Hazewinkle who's working with him and Cody Brewer while Sam trains for the Olympics. Probably won't AA this year, as it's just so loaded with returning former AA's and great kids. Ryan looks like he'll have a good future for OU.

133 - Cody Brewer graduates after this year. More than likely a high place winner this year, making him a 3x All American and at least one time national Champion for OU for his career. Not sure who's going to replace him. Most likely candidate is true freshman Sean Deshazer, a 3x state champion out of Kansas who's redshirting this year. He was ranked as high as #3 at 132 his senior year in high school, 2x High School All-American.

149 - Davion Jefferies is a true freshman and placed 2nd, losing to Collica who's just on fire right now. Davion looks like he'll turn out to have a pretty good future for us. But most true freshmen get bet up pretty good their first year out of high school. See Ryan Millhof. I won't be surprised if he drops to 141 next year. He's a thin, more lanky kid with tons of athleticism.

165 - Clark Glass is a senior and is a good, decent college wrestler. Took third this year at the Big Twelve tournament. Probably won't AA, but will probably win a few matches at the NCAA tournament this year before he goes out.

174 - Matt "The Dude" Reed is a junior this year, and kind of a more athletic Clark Glass with just a little more upside IMO. Great explosive first move, pretty good defense, but doesn't open it up very often. I'd like to see a lot of improvement by next year.

285 - Ross Larson is a junior and has flirted around the top 15 all year long. Took 3rd at the Big Twelve tournament last year and this year. He has the potential to beat some decent opponents at the NCAA tournament, and has a win over Austin Marsden earlier in his career. I won't predict him being an AA this year, but I won't be surprised if he does, either. Should be looking at a top eight ranking at the beginning of next year.

Other posters are more savvy than me but I was pretty happy with the way Smith wrestled after the layoff.

The Brock injury just sucks. I know a lot of fans (especially those who only pay attention to if we win it all or not) are anxious about the title drought but IMO Coach Smith is doing a hell of a job. I think he is squeezing everything he can out of the team this year. Now it probably won't be enough unless something crazy happens but I've had a blast watching these guys develop this year.

Its finally close enough to visualize. I wished I would've watched other conference tourneys besides ours, but I didn't. With Klimara losing to Milhoff again, I am beginning to wonder if he AA's again? He seems to be moving his style to more of a reaction than attacking. I could be wrong, but this hurts him in a few weeks.

125...just misses AA
133...2-2
141...Champ, but I wish he would attack more.
149...Collica is back in summer form. Look out MSG.
157...I think he gets Nolf, but either way, AA.
165...Champ
174...Tough to guess on, but I would bet AA. A tough draw could stop that, but I think he AAs.
184...AA....Wrestling like his hair is actually on fire.
197...very surprised this weekend, but happy with any wins at NCAAs here.
285...I would like to say AA, but he is #5 looking in and could be looking into top 8...but AA

That is 7 AAs with two Champs. I doubt that is enough, but we can hope for bad draws for PSU outside of Retherford, McIntosh and Nickal. Nolf would be in that category if I didn't think Smith beats him in the rematch.

I think Klimara is ok.... I don't see him beating the top 4 guys as they are a level ahead. Milhoffs style can be frustrating to wrestle and he scrambles as good as anyone. I would like for him to go in on a better note for sure. Maybe a good Thursday for him and he will get some mojo back. Seniors in their last NCAA are tough to figure out!

Milhoffs style does frustrate you. Eddie shot him off the mat and constantly put pressure on him for 3 periods and just lost on a scramble. I almost feel another match with Milhoff would just come down to the referee. A wrestler that does nothing for the first six minutes should reflect that in the score.

Eddie is a pretty safe bet to AA. Just as there is a gap after the top 4 at the weight there is also a gap after the top 7-8 and Eddies is in that 5-8 group.

174 is the biggest wildcard as his draw will be massive in predicting his potential as he will struggle with the bigger stronger guys even if they are lower ranked guys.

184 and 149 have the most chance for upward movement in regards to their likely seed.

I think the time off due to injury will push Joe just outside the top 3.

PSU will have to have a major implosion to not win as many of their guys are also peaking.

I think Eddie finishes his career strong and AA. I predict 7 AA and 2 champs but heil scares me as he doesn't seperate the score. He didn't bonus at all in conference tournament. I'm exited about how high collica will finish. I could see him in a third place match with Mayes from Missouri. I could also see Rogers getting beat early but getting mad and pinning his next 2 or 3 opponents. Can't help but wonder what our team title predictions would be if Brock were healthy as we would have been a bonus point threat with AA potential.

Discussion on themat has Nolan getting as high as a 4 seed.
I got very pumped up watching in KC but then the huge balloon lost a little air on further reflection. My picks are from my head(always a bad pick) and not from my gut but I just can not drink the orange Kool-aid enough.
125 Klimara has done it before and two years ago he was rooked out of AA status. Not wrestling aggressive enough and unless he turns it around I am not seeing AA for him. I would love it and he deserves it but it is a tough weight.
133.I hope he has a repeat performance from a year ago but 2-2 is the best I see for him as he will not be seeded.
141 Like most of you I see him in the finals but since he keeps matches so close he is a late takedown away from not placing. I think he is sound enough and I see high AA and possibly a champion but it will be a nail biter every time he wrestles.
149. I think he will place high but it is a very strong weight. He will place anywhere from 3rd to 6th.He and Weigle are the most improved on the team.
157 Joe looked very good and he will AA, maybe as high as 4th.
165 Unless they change the rules and let two people wrestle Alex at the same time Alex may go through the tournament with all bonus point wins including in the finals.
174. Chandler Rogers is very fun to watch but he is too small for 174 and this was proven this weekend when he got out muscled by a fringe wrestler who will probably not AA. He will provide thrills but will not AA this year
184 If there is a God of wrestling then he will finish first but since there is not he will place high and I am going to say 3rd. Favorite wrestler on the team and definitely gets the "Jack Jensen" award.
197 Strong as a bull and great on top. John says he has worked his butt off in practice to improve his offense o his feet and is starting to come around. However, a very wise poster on this board who will go unnamed told a truth, at least to me. If his opponents concentrate on his feet and go away from the upper body he will be in trouble. I predict him to win as much as 3 matches but no AA but I am very optimistic for his future. Definitely the best overall athlete on the team.
285 Slightly better than last year which is not good enough in my opinion. I want to be wrong about this in the worst way as it is his senior year and he is a great team guy but I see him leaving OSU with one All-American place under his belt. This will make his dad mad as some of my posts in the past have and I do not blame him as I would not want Micco or Okstatefan criticized if they were wrestling now. Again, he has the tools to be an AA and maybe he needs to get mad and show this old man just how wrong you can be. He should place as high as he is ranked with his skill set but he just has not separated himself from the wrestlers from three to twelve. Maybe he will at the NCAA and I truly hope so.
Take note of this Micco, I am predicting 5 All Americans and one champion. So much for my orange colored glasses.

Wow. I out drank oberebo in Orange Kool-Aid!

And now, hopefully, I am back in Mr Marsden's good graces.

Not sure why people are down on Marsden. Since the beginning of last year he has 4 losses Gwiz, Medberry, Walz and Telford. He has a win this year 4-0 over the sixth ranked heavy and is 2-0 in his career vs Coon.

It's because he Wrestles like a 285 and if you predict that Klimara doesn't AA and Heil doesn't win it because of the lack of separation.....you have to pick the same from Marsden.

I've noticed him turn it on a few times more this year, so maybe he does well! I think it's fair to believe he is in danger of not placing though.

I feel the same way. Of course anything can happen but I feel like Marsden has wrestled really well this year. I think he is outside the tier of the absolute elite guys but I would be shocked if he wasn't an All-American.

from a poster on themat:

The d1 wrestling committee has decided to release the field of 330 today instead of at noon tomorrow. They will begin with the 285lb class at 1EST and end with the 125lb class at 5:30EST. Brackets and seeding released at 6pm EST tomorrow.

People are too down on Klimara and Marsden due to not being as exciting as others (and just to pick nits at oberebo...Heil is 2 late take downs away from not placing, not one...and to further the point, how many times has he been taken down this year? I know McKenna is still looking for his first takedown of Heil). Klimara has beaten ALL of the guys outside of the top 4. The only losses he has to those outside the top 4 is twice to Millhof. Anything can happen, but I challenge you to find 4 guys who can beat him for 5-8.

Also, as has already been pointed out Marsden is much the same only losing to the really top guys and beating all the 6-16 guys.

Don't make the Taylor/Dake mistake. Wrestling close matches doesn't ALWAYS mean you're going to lose at NCAAs. I'd rather they worked to blow the score open too, but they do what they do at this point.

I like that they are doing it early, but it doesn't affect OSU. All 10 auto qualified. It would be great if the released the updated polls, RPI and awards standings.

Anyone think Weigel might be able to channel an inner Jake Rosholt at Nationals?

I think Weigel is an excellent pick to pull an upset, but I'm not sure he can do it several matches in a row. He is very match-up dependent as guys who are really quick and/or good in neutral are going to be tough for him. Guys like Downey and Smith, who are strength guys who like to work upper body, he has a real shot at. It will all come down to the draw and how he is wrestling. I don't like his chances to AA this year, but given his development I like his chances going forward.

Okiespladle, I do not mind nit picks and will be the first to admit I am right about as much as I am wrong and in the case of Marsden I definitely hope I am wrong just as in the case of Klimara. I have posted and given my picks. I am not going to argue about them as my picks are what they are. Micco will tell you that my heart picks all ten to be national champions.

Oh, I know it and I wasn't taking a shot at you. I'm kind of surprised as I'm almost always one of the most pessimistic on this board, but that isn't the case this year. I know we all want them to win every match. I just responded because we're in that time of year when all I want to do is talk wrestling and there is nothing on the mat until next week!

I might reconsider my thoughts on being pessimistic about the bookends of our team as well? Klimara does seem to attack much more than I gave him credit for...but he is defended well against some of the time? 125ers are like cats, so maybe I am being short-sighted here?

285 is just a hangup with me I guess? The man is a giant, and an athletic giant at that. Maybe I just expect more out of that combo than what he has shown and all he does is win...like Heil. So, I will withdraw my prediction that they both miss AA and fall on the other side of the coin and claim they upset a higher ranked guy who played with fire while Wrestling them.

To me, Klimara's problem isn't that he's not a quality guy...it's that 125 just seems so loaded. You can take about 10-12 guys at that weight who could AA. Maybe more. He definitely has the talent to AA again.

I'm less concerned about Heil. Even though he doesn't beat his guys worse, I think he could if needed. If someone did score on him late in the match, I think he'd be able to ratchet up his intensity to meet that challenge.

As a whole, Eddie's matches were the most exciting of the tournament. The OU kid is really slick and a good wrestler.Eddie has and can beat him. He pushed the pace from the start and just didn't get rewarded. His heart is big and his motor is strong so I'm still looking for good things from Mr. Klimara.

Here was what I thought of our wrestling. Klimara is showing more vulnerability and his placing is more in questioned. I don't think he wrestled good just fair. Harding never quits and gets the most out of his abilities but I hope Brock wrestles 33 next year. Heil did not wrestle good. In the beginning of the year I marveled at his ability to get on a leg and methodically work to a take down, during the big 12 hw as not as good. He still could be a national champ but he will need to perform better at Nationals. Collica wrestled and a little sharper and he could place high at Nationals. Smith wrestled solid especially with having been injured. I would love for him to kick in another gear and challenge the top 4 at this weight class. Dieringer is a super star but I was shocked in the finals match. I thought he could have put a lot more pressure on his opponent and made him wrestle or force the ref to make a call. I have seen more pushing and hand wrestling than I have ever seen this year. He will win a national championship though. I thought Chandler was not the wrestler he was 2 weeks ago. I think his struggles were more mental than his opponent. The loss of his father likely has changed his thinking and his wrestling. A devastating loss for him and I hope some healing comes for him. Yes I have to admit Boyd is wrestling good and I hope that it continues at nationals. I was excited for Preston he is starting to look like a wrestlers. I have noted despite his strength he is not a thrower and tries to stay clear of another wrestler setting up a throw. It was nice to see him shoot a takedown and be successful. Some improvement in the next 2 weeks and he could be an all American. Marsden wrestled solid and I would pick him to all American but not place high. The first day we were real good the second day not as good. I really want us to win Nationals and beat Pen. St.
Also I will be hoping that Josh Rodriquez and Zillmer all American. I am a Bison fan also. I became a Cowboy fan around 1976 and I remember we recruited LeRoy Smith and Eric Wais that year who of course both became National Champs. I amprone to be more negative than anyone else on this forum but that was my view of the Big 12 and upcoming Nationals.

Not sure what I just read?
