Monday Doc

This was excellent. As 1978 was my first year in college and so the first year I was a fan; seeing Lee Roy, Mike Sheets and Monday was a joy. I loved watching these guys and living this time in OSU wrestling. I have nothing but admiration for Dave Shultz. Regardless of his motives, reliving his coaching of Kenny brings back fonds memories of his integrity and love od USA wrestling.

That was very well done. I had no idea about how he did not make weight. Dupont was a complete spoiled idiot.

Rudis+ made their Kenny Monday documentary free today. The production rivals an ESPN 30 for 30. https://core.rudis.com/kenny-monday-doc/
It was very good and it was a shame Mike Sheets didn't make the Olympic team but he had the best wrestler in the World at his weight he had to beat to make the Olympics. It is hard to believe that with those wrestlers on our team we did not win Nationals (John Smith, Kendall Cross, Monday and Sheets).

We had loaded teams, Eric Wais, Clar Anderson, Mark Perry Sr., Thomas Landrum, Randy Willingham, Leo Bailey, Mitch Shelton, and the Skoves, etc. OU was loaded until mid 80’s, ISU was good….and Iowa still won every year. We were even ranked #1 sometimes and just couldn’t put it together. Heck, Iowa won big most years. Some don’t know Dave Schultz actually started at OSU before transferring. We still had a murderer‘s row of Monday, Ricky Stewart and Sheets after he left. Can’t remember why Schultz left.

John came on the tail end and Kendall was after those guys.

Out one night and ran into Stan Able. He told me we bought Kenny and he had exploded on the parents afterwards. Said he told them he gave his brother(s) scholarships when he shouldn’t because they weren’t good enough in an expectation to get Kenny, Thought he had a deal.

He left to be with brother Mark at UCLA (I don't think we wanted to offer Mark any money) so he red-shirted and Mark didn't place that year. UCLA dropped wrestling and they transfered to OU, I think because of free-style coach Humphreys. I'm not sure why Dave lost a year if UCLA dropped thier program. Anyway, that's what I remember.

Yeah, I couldn’t remember if Ricky came in and beat him out or something….which would be hard as Schultz got like 2nd or something his year at OSU. Sheets beating him in Gallagher was insane…almost as loud as when Mitch later pinned Dr. Death in the same match.

My memory is the year that Ricky won Nationals he pinned Schultz in the finals.

Harley that is correct and I was there to watch it at Princeton. Mark Schultz beat a Banach to win his title that year. I took a picture of Ricky after the match. About two years ago I sent it to him and got a nice email in reply.

I Shultz was 3rd for us in '78 and I don't think he would have had any fear of Ricky (no slight to him). Ricky was 7th in '79 while Dave was red-shirting at UCLA. Ricky was champ in '80 when Dave was setting out a year at OU and pinned Dave (#1 seed) in '81 for #2.

Sheets beating Shultz was more exciting for me than the Dr. Mitch pin and a close 2nd to the '78 Big 8 champions ship (will maybe nt that close)

Uh….no.

Ricky Stewart did pin Dave in 1981, and Mark Schultz did win a National title that year (you also took a Polaroid of him after winning, and I have it).

But he didn’t beat Banach that year for the title. He beat #1 seed Mike DeAnna from Iowa State 10-4.

He beat Ed Banach the following year in Ames Iowa 16-8.

Dave Schultz and Ricky Stewart would have been at different weights while at OSU. Dave was 3rd at 150 in 1978. He didn’t move up to 158 until 1981 and got pinned by Stewart. Then he moved up to 167 the following year and beat Sheets in 1982.

This could be painful Micco, because DeAnna wrestled for Iowa I believe.

Dad gum it Harley…..yup. I are an idiot. I had ISU on the brain thinking about the 1982 reference, and I toooootally whiffed on DeAnna.

Good catch.

Micco, about half the supposed facts I write here have at least 1 error in them. No problem.
