I just came across a vintage Newcomb guitar Tube Amp (the pic's from Ebay, but condition of mine is near identical)

I see that there is an input in the front, but since I have no guitar.... is there any way to test it to see if it functions and get a handle on the sound quality?

I know these old tube amps have a following among those who want a retro sound so I'd like to find a new home for it.

Take it to your local music store, if you have one. They will gladly test it for you.

If you know a local luthier who works on amps take it there. Those guys are usually tone nerds who can really dial it in and ID any problems. I have a really good guy in Tulsa

Luthier? Why, I hardly know her!

Yep, trying to find local musician or store. Have you ever had a speaker "re-coned" or is it better to just buy a newer one, made out of more modern materials if the speaker has issues?

Depends on the speaker imo. I have re-coned a couple of subs before and it isn't very hard to do if you want to tinker on your own. But, most places would probably do it for you for not much. If this isn't something your crazy serious about spending tons on, a re-cone is a viable option for sure.

Honestly not sure. Depends on the value of keeping it original vs the ease of simply replacing the speaker. Are you wanting to sell it or play on it?

I'm looking to sell it.

But, it's not the set up I'm actually thinking about re-coning. I've also got a vintage califone tube amp record player with a 2 speaker set up. It was specifically designed for carrying, as the record player "nests" in the bottom of the two speakers and the entire thing clamps together. The sound isn't bad (it needs to be cleaned and gone through) but I think it would probably greatly improve the sound to move to a more modern material/design for the speakers.

I'm just looking at options as I want to sell it as well. (Just the amp/record player sold for $250 on Ebay and it appears that no one has ever sold a complete unit.)

My dad used to call square dances and he bought this set-up for that purpose, it's got a mic plug and can play records ranging from 33-1/3, 45 and 78 rpm.

It's probably going to be best to sell them "as is" but I want to be able to point out the option of any upgrade for any potential buyer.

I found a pic of the same model Califone pnonograph/speaker combo that someone else sold online http://www.terapeak.com/worth/vinta...-phonograph-tube-amp-w-speakers/171122491235/

The one I have looks to be in better shape than the one that sold, but there is a bit of "crackling" when you adjust the volume on the speakers. I'm sure someone can probably "fine tune" the thing to eliminate that.
