Maui - where to stay?

I stayed in a newly updated 1 bedroom condo just off a beach in Kapalua. Was only about 325 a night. Think it was called Kapalua villas. Beachfront. Loved the area. Was less traffic there. Golf course and great snorkeling.

It's been years for us, but you might consider staying around Kahului. Central so you can get easily to the tourist plantations, Haleakala, Hana (highly suggest the drive to Hana), but less expensive than the resort areas on the Lahaina/kapalua side. Beach isn't quite as nice in all areas, but plenty good. I also don't see your pasty butt doing much sun worshiping.

You should message @N. Pappagiorgio As he is now the magistrate of a portion of one of the lesser isalands.

Where to stay depends on what you want and when you go. If you go during whale season, then stay on west side of island.
The NW side has Kapalua and Kannapali. That is my favorite place to stay. Lots of amenities.

Central west is Kihei. Probably get the best rates of any west side town.

SW is Wailea. Like Kapalua you will have high end resorts. Unlike Kapalua it is much drier and not as lush.

1) drive to Hana is a must. Stop a lot on the way. You can drive all the way around instead of turning around at Hana. Recommend that.
2) do Haleakala volcano. We we actually forced to flee up the mountain during a tsunami scare when there was an earthquake off of South American coast
3) go whale watching if you go Nov-Mar
4) gets scuba diving if you are certified. Had my favorite and least favorite dives off of Maui.

Agenda is largely focused on 11 and 14 yo fun. Ended up getting a Villa. Ten days to plan for... Snuba/snorkeling, though wife and I are certified we will hold on Scuba till the youngest catches up.

Hana is on the list. Got second choice in the luaua.

Maui so far has been my favorite vacation. Amazing place. Not touristy at all. Ready to take the whole family but waiting for the kids to get a little older where at least they remember it later in life

you should try the deep sea fishing...not that expensive. Great way to spend half a day. I think it was less than $500 for half a day in a air-conditioned fishing boat that included everything but drinks. We'd take turns manning the fishing poles. It's not really fishing but you can say you were on the boat when the fish bit the hook!

Eat at Mamas Fish House. It a bit pricey though but man is it good. As there is a restaurant called Fish Market they have the best fish tacos. Wife and Inlove Maui it is our favorite vacation spot.

Mammas is good. And a great location. Located in Pa’ia it is a bit out of the way from most resorts, but worth the trip. And the town of Pa’ia is nice.

if you feel like hippying out
and there’s still a 79 forest green dodge high top van with a dream catcher hanging off the rear view running around the island it was a great place to spend a few nights at paia or out towards hana back in 94

David if you want to do snorkeling with the kids check out a boat called Hula Girl. They hit up some pretty good spots over there. They leave out of whalers bay and it has some decent places to eat. Also check out Duke's it was a good place to eat. @davidallen

I can tell you this, the last time I went to Maui I was working at St. John’s and we were playing in the Maui Invitational. We stayed at the Sheraton. It sucked. Maui is gorgeous and kid friendly. The Four Seasons is legit.

That said go to Trinidad and Tabago. Much shorter flight, similar time zone and just as good.

Dukes had a French roasts dish with coconut syrup that was awesome. We went there a few times for breakfast

So freaking ready for these 10 days off... in London this next week and just wreaked from all the travel/work. Time for a break.

Just got back from Maui...loved it. Stayed in a house on Keawakapu Beach.

Did surfing lessons near Cove Park but don’t recall the name of the service..I can look if something you’re interested in. Was a great experience and I bet your kids wold love it.

Did a helicopter tour through Blue Hawaiian which was a really good way to see the island. We didn’t do the road to Hana..everyone said it was a miserable stop and go drive and would test your patience. Plus you’ll see a lot more of Maui and see things you can’t see any other way.

Rented some waverunners one morning through a place near the Hyatt up closer to Kapula...it sucked. Don’t do it.

Lot’s of good fresh seafood places on the beach. Spago’s at Four Seasons is really good...Got the whole Moi.

You got some bad advice on the road to Hana. One of the coolest vacation things I've ever done. Great secluded beaches and views of the backside of the volcano impossible to get otherwise.

Don't share the view on Spago, there are many other restaurants in Wailea that are IMO superior. Morimoto at the Andaz is special.

One awesome thing for fun not yet mentioned is the zip-lining. Huge distances, spectacular canyons, amazing views.

Oh ya the Zip lining is amazing over there. We did one that was on an old army base also. It was pretty cool. There are several over there to do though.

I also agree on the road to Hana. It is worth doing because it gives you a chance to see parts of the island you wouldn't get to see. If you did the Blue Hawaiian why is the world did you not fly to Hana then do the van back? My family did that one year and man it took all the stress of driving the road out. We stopped at beaches and waterfalls that were beautiful. They did lunch for us also.

Maybe Re: road to Hana. We did get to see it via the helicoptor and also got to see the north volcano area (Puu KuKui) which was totally amazing. Huge waterfalls everywhere. If you have time, I’d do both. Helicopter advantage was we were back at the house by 11:00 am with a cold drink on the beach.

I’m sure there are better places than Spago but we had a chef at the house and wanted to give them a break one evening and Spago was close by so we gave it a run. Our meal was pretty good and they had some nice bottles of wine...helluva lot better selection than most places in OK. We didn’t get to go but heard Merryman’s (sp?) is great but I believe it is closer to Kapula which was a haul from our house.

Heard the same thing on zip lining. We didn’t do it (kids are still a bit young) but the ones we saw looked pretty badass.

One other thing we did was the Luau at the Grand Wailea...meh. Below average food and felt a little Branson-like. Kids loved it though. Thought the fire dancing, etc. was neat. Adults were sucking down drinks just to get through.

Damn, JV...didn’t even know that was an option. As long as I could have still got to the see the north mountain/volcano via the helicopter, I’d do it. The sceneary up north is so different than the south. So many waterfalls and places that look like a human has ever walked. Unbelievable area.

Agree 100%. The first time we visited we drove to Hana and then turned around. The second time we kept driving and it was spectacular.

The only thing I ever did more rewarding on land in the Hawaiian islands was on Kauai when we hiked on the Na Pali coast to Hanakapiai Beach and then hiked 2 miles inland to the incredible pool of Hanakapiai Falls. Swimming in the pool 100 yards and through the mist of the 300 foot waterfall was amazing. And the view getting there some of the best views I have ever seen.

Kids been casting Beach Boys all day, bags are packed, just checked in for flights and found I scored upgrades for the whole crew. Westbound and down, the Allens are loaded up and trucking!
Head on over to the Big Island where us natives live.

I love Maui it is my favorite place in the world. The wife and I would save up and go every three years. I have done a ton of cool stuff over there. Last time we went we did a raft boat to Lanai and snorkeled the whole island. We got to see spinner dolphins on that trip also. It was one of the cooler things I have done over there. Have fun man and recharge those batteries it is a great place to do it.
