Mark Perry Questions The National STEM Crisis

He didn’t answer anything, tho...girls performing better in math and science in high school means little in combating the gender biases and wage gaps later on.

About 75 percent of students change majors in college.

He took one year - 2016 and rebutted statements made at an unknown time. When is Sally Ride's quote and what were the numbers when she said it?

STEM in general is in crisis for this country. Arguing gender differences absent a discussion about the larger issue is a waste of effort.
Agreed. Unfortunately the discussion almost always centers around gender.

China should scare the shite out of anyone paying attention right now. They are completely outperforming us in building skills for the future.
China isn't the only country. The degree to which the educational skills and job skills have fallen is frightening. We used to be #1 in education and now we're something like #25.

My oldest will be a freshman at osu. She’s declaring as an engineering major and basically her goal is to lead the way in setting a new standard for women in engineering. Girl has her whole future lined out.

She feels like if she finishes at the top of her class she has better chances of finding a better job than her male counterparts and will have an advantage when it comes to moving up the ladder due to her gender.

All of that is clearly far off and yet to be seen but I gotta give her credit. At 18 she’s more mature than I am at 41. Valedictorian and got her life all planned out.

Sorry. Just a good opportunity to take credit for something I don’t deserve and brag about my superior parenting skills.

What about the gender education gap?

What are your thoughts on the value of education and which gender most often finishes high school and goes on to college? What should the gov't be doing to force equality here?

Good job dad. When she is ready drop me a note, will sponsor for internship...

If you were to take some kids to a math tutor business and look at the other kids, right here in Oklahoma, you would find that about 3/4 of the kids there working after school on math are asian. The rest are hispanic. Not a blond or white kid among the 20 or so that are all being tutored.

Imagine if the white kids put their energy from competitive athletics into math. That's what the asian kids seem to be doing here in Oklahoma.

Exactly, parenting. Gen X white women wanting to be bffs with their little shits ruined a whole crop.

Sorry, I understood from @OKSTATE1 that the issue was Dims and the Russia witch hunt.

@davidallen you are more interested in twisting a point and scoring political points then really resolving anything. China is a threat on so many levels it is not even funny. You think wasting time and energy on Russia and limiting the ability for an Administration to concentrate on moving this country forward is a joke or a sound bite? No one had a problem with Russian "collusion" being investigated, it has been and Trump has been publicly exonerated but yet Mueller lives on. Remember this gem from you:

Conviction is the last thing I want. I want a prolonged, paralyzing investigation followed by a raucous debate on whether or not to impeach including lots of innuendo about fellow travelers on the Trump Train including Pence and Ryan. At that point I would very much want 45 to steadfastly maintain his innocence and continue his intention to run for reelection, facing such a devastating primary challenge that the GOP is nothing but a smoking crater.

What's the phrase I am looking for... oh yeah "burn the ****er down" - in this case "the ****er" applies to the Trump White House and his enablers in the GOP.

You are just a hater, you do not even want a strong opposition party. You want to rule your way, because you think you know what is best for everyone. Many of us that are "conservatives" want ALL of Washington burned to the ground and start over, not you, oh no you actually believe the Dem crooks are good honest people only looking out for the rest of us. Most conservatives wanted Russian collusion investigated and Trump charged if guilty, no collusion was found, this is something Dems want as a soft overthrow of the government and you are ok with it, which is pathetic.

Read the above @davidallen, you are far past a cheerleader, I am sure you hate positive news for this country because you so hate Trump.

You really have no points to make other then "cratering" one side of the aisle in Washington, that makes you short sighted and hate filled and not possible to enter in to any reasonable political debate.

Stop making excuses.

If you’re just tuning in, we’ve elected to steer the thread away from discussing the real issue and instead focus on how my team is right and your team is wrong. We’ll get back to the issue at hand sometime later on down the road.

This attitude (AND crappy ass parenting AND an anti intellectual attitude across several social groups) is why we’re here now.

Here’s a question, why don’t we just adopt Singapore Math in its entirety across the US? It’s clearly the superior teaching methodology.

Much of our math is based on memorization and repetition; they teach their students to problem solve - from the very beginning.

When I was selecting a school for my boys I had to choose between a private school that teaches Singapore Math K through 7, or a magnet/immersion school that teaches them another language. Sucks. I wanted both, but ended up going with the foreign language.

End rant.

Flying back from Belgium thru Dulles I sat next to the 2nd highest education official in the US. I shared my thoughts on education and he said I was correct but the country not ready for it. My short version is that all education in this country should be deemed a privilege and not a right and teachers should be treated like the Captain of a Plane or Cruise Ship and be able to have a child removed from a school for the remainder of the year if they were disrupting a classroom that kept other kids from learning.

He said he visited China and that is what they do. He said you get one child in China and they are the entire future for your family so parents care and discipline. They sort the kids by skills, are they better for skilled labor, or more advanced studies, etc...

He said if a child does not do their homework or is disruptive one evening the head of the school shows up and talks to the parent to get it fixed. If not, the whole family moves to a school more suitable for that child. He said in China if where you live is determined by what school your child attends.

He smiled real big and said you think China has a big problem controlling students?

Told me I was 100% correct but our country light years away.

I had nuns that disciplined us when I was in school so severely it would be child abuse today, which is BS. If that did not work you were kicked out of the school.

We are a country of pussies afraid to discipline our kids and we coddle them. Oh yeah, I could get my @zz spanked or get in trouble at a friends house and if I mentioned it (only did it once) to my parents I got my @zz whipped again. None of this do not touch or speak to my child.

It is not all about money, it is about holding the adults accountable and forcing kids to do what is right. If you have kids and do not care about their education and it is glorified daycare? Not the governments or the schools problem, not fair to hold kids back that want to learn and can not because the class room is a zoo. I have taught JA in this state and let me tell you, some classrooms are a zoo with some little snotty nosed punks with no respect for adults, who careless about education, and hate many of their classmates and bully them that need a good @zz whipping or reality check. Poor teachers. Have enough consequences and accountability that eventually the culture in the home changes.

You are exactly what you yourself said you are, no excuses and just facts, your own words.

Let me replay our conversation ITT.

Ponca Dan - Here is a a link showing women doing better in STEM early in life - interesting huh?

Me - Talking about gender and STEM without talking about how the US is failing - not good.

You - But Russia.

Me - Russia? We can't work on big issues because of Russia?

You - You're a mean hater. See where you said mean things.

Me - Stop making excuses - hold Trump accountable.

You - You're a mean hater.

What would you think of this approach?

China is a huge topic on all fronts, you brought up international competitiveness and that could become a security issue.

I think it might help, but some parents do not care and some may not afford the internet.
I think China, at least according to some of the research I have seen, is moving to combine the Sesame Social Credit system to include the behavior of your children.

Orwellian stuff and NOT something I would advocate for, but it is a manifestation at the state level of the notion of holding parents accountable for their children's behavior.
