Appellate court takes up 'Making a Murderer' inmate's case
Today
CHICAGO (AP) — A federal appeals court will consider the fate of a Wisconsin inmate featured in the Netflix series "Making a Murderer."

Brendan Dassey was sentenced to life in prison in 2007 in the death of photographer Teresa Halbach two years earlier. Dassey told detectives he helped his uncle, Steven Avery, rape and kill Halbach in the Avery family's Manitowoc County salvage yard.

A federal magistrate judge overturned Dassey's conviction in August. He ruled that investigators took advantage of Dassey's youth — he was 16 at the time — and cognitive problems to coerce his confession.

The state of Wisconsin argues that detectives did nothing wrong.

Dassey, now 27, has remained in prison pending the appeal.

Avery was sentenced to life in prison in a separate trial. He's pursuing his own appeal.

Dateline is doing an episode on the case this Friday. I don't know if there's anything really new going on, aside from what you posted.

I still cannot fathom how they got convictions on each with the murder theory happening differently in each case.

I watched the Dateline episode. Nothing really new. The prosecutor has put out a book, and the new attorney that took on the case is claiming that they've got something, but no mention of exactly what (understably). Overall, it pretty much felt like a time filler.

When people talk about this show I always think of the HBO show "The Night Of". I am kinda on the fence that Steven did it and the cops just took Brendan down with him to make the agenda work.

I still need to finish this. Did you ever listen to the podcast Serial?

I think they were both innocent.

So, Avery's attorney finally named an alternate killer, what way you guys?

I have no idea if Avery is guilty or not. The investigation was so f-ed up. I do find it fascinating that the county that was supposed to be hands off was the only one that found all of the key evidence.

No doubt after watching the series the kid was manipulated into confessing and a lot of what he said isn't true but also have to believe after watching how easily the lawyers and police were able to manipulate him his uncle could have gotten him to do whatever he wished. Probably not the actual murder liked they claimed but I wouldn't be surprised if he was used to help dispose of the body or maybe Avery was trying to set him up as the fall guy. That said I'm not sure how much I would hold him responsible if he was used in a cover up. Poor kid needs some adult supervision and help and he ain't gonna get it from anyone in his family.
