It was a pretty dominating effort by the home team. I wanted to post a few things I thought were interesting.
Starting off with the run blocking, I thought #73 looked much better this week. Last week he had some trouble. In particular, blocking down on the power plays and taking good angles. On this play, he took a much more shallow angle, then, with good footwork widened out to pick his man off allowing Carson to run it for a score.
Speaking of improved blocking, I thought the Cowboy backs did a much better job this week. Above, Veatch absolutely "Shawn Willises" the DE and pushes him back 4 yards back into another defender.
Above are a couple of the more ugly runs from the game. The first pic was a counter that seemed doomed from the start. But I posted it to show some cutback opportunity that I think Carson has been missing. He didn't miss a huge gain here, but a 3-4 yard gain versus a 1 yard loss is a big difference. Hopefully, as the season progresses the game will slow down for him some.
In the second pic, UTSA twists the DTs and #57 gets pushed into the backfield and the other interior lineman get caught in the muck. Watch out for us sneaking #20 in there as an upback like we did here. I bet we catch a safety sleeping sometime this season running a playaction off this play.
Some good news, bad news (and more good news).
Good news, Mason wants to go to Seales (at the top of the pic here) but sees 3 defenders. In this pic, he is in the middle of checking his throw. He waits for Seals to get a little more open before firing a pretty accurate ball that is dropped/knocked away.
Bad news, if he would have looked left, Shepherd was wide open. He was definitely locked on to Seales on this play.
Good news, he's only playing in his 6th game. A lot of young QBs throw a pick here.
Conference USA officials. Two different plays. The top pic is the 1st down fade to Washington (hard to catch a jump ball when you can't jump because the defender is holding you down by the shoulder pads), the second pic is the 3rd down fade to Washington. Defender is literally grabbing one of his arms. Hopefully these are called in league play. OK. I'm done whining.
