Lady GaGa on the Oscers.

I've always thought she was talented. Whacko, but talented. Now, your rock cred is still intact, but watching the oscars might hurt all your other creds.

Agreed, she was incredible. Didn't know that kind of talent was in there.

The Oscars sucked overall though and I can't think of a single movie (other than possibly AS) that anyone will talk about 5-10 years from now. Doogie was awful.

I hope people are still talking about Whiplash, because it was really good. It and Grand Budapest Hotel were the only two of the Best Pic nominees I had seen, but I enjoyed both, and actually have an interest in seeing the others.

Boyhood seems like one that people will talk about even if only for the novelty of how it was shot.

Of course, I don't know how much anyone talks about the films at the 2005 or 2010 Oscars either. The highest grossing films don't really come up either (Shrek 2 and Avatar respectively).

I think this is dead wrong (about the movies). I think people will still be talking about: Birdman, Boyhood and Grand Budapest Hotel for sure. I haven't seen Whiplash so I can't comment. The others (other than American Sniper which you mentioned) were certainly more forgettable IMO.

Well... when you are married and have 3 daughters... you have to pick your battles.

Is this some kind of new euphemism? You must've really liked her performance.

So you're saying you only have one tv in your house?

I was bored. Swing a cat by its tail in LA, Chicago, NYC, etc, and you'll hit a middling professional singer who could have done that. By eschewing novelty, the performance itself was a novelty act. 'Yeah! You're not a freak all the time! Standing ovation!'

I can't believe I watched almost two hours of the show, off and on. Patricia Arquette: 'OK gays and blacks, enough about you, time to help straight white women.' Woman-beater Terrance Howard can't pull his isht together for 1 minute to read script about three best film nominees. Woman-beater Sean Penn makes a 'green card' jab, but gets a pass because he paddled a boat during Katrina or something. The Common and John Legend performance was pretty good (but what a simplistic song), but their acceptance speech was killer, you have to admit, even if you disagree with their politics. lol at Tim McGraw trying to channel Glen Campbell---go back to cheese about Roll Tide and other strained affectations of southerness. The Academy gives the highest recognition to a film about the anxieties of stardom and Hollywood. How predictable (but I'm glad it will drive more people to read Ray Carver). Doogie was bad (and his writers), and he stuffs his briefs.

That's overstating it, but I get your point. However... finding someone with legit Broadway level vocal chops who can also play a piano like this, and can put on a Madonna-level stage show, is not cat swinging material. I've never been a fan of her pop schlock, but that combination of talents is quite rare by any measure.

Credit, where credit is due, I say. Otherwise once comes off as a bit pretentious, like this guy...

Not a fan by any stretch of the imagination, but she was fantastic. From the neck down, I would. From the neck up, pretty scary to look at. But the girl can sing, so I'd say she's got a pretty secure day job.

Beauty, as they say, is just a light switch away. And besides - I think if anyone thinks she's not pretty enough to hit, they are not taking into account what an absolute mind-blowing wildcat she no doubt would be. Give me a 7 with a hot bod that knows how to use it any day over a 10 who doesn't.

I just read a report that 36Million people watched the Oscars.

I have never watched more than 10 mins of one and really don't understand why anyone would.

Comic shop guy makes the occasional good point. If I'm the lone hold-out on this board who doesn't fall over himself over a Lady Ga-Ga 'Sound of Music' medley performed at the Oscars, then I'll wear any name you throw at me. I'm also willing to put my unpretentious musical pleasures up against anyone's. I listened to pop radio on a recent trip to Springfield IL and back. I'm ready to go into karaoke battles girded with my own medley of Ed Sheehan, Taylor Swift, RiRi/Kanye/Sir Paul, and Fun. My encore will be the Luke Bryan part in Florida Georgia Line's "This Is How We Roll."

The memorizing segment is always a bit emotional as I like hollywoods golden age..Bacall, Attenborough, Garner, Rooney, Robin Williams....they will be missed.

Kirk Douglass (age 98) stands as the last legend of that lost era, although a few others (such as Olivia de Havilland, also 98) still are with us.

Oh my god, who is she?
I get drunk
On jealously.
But you'll come back
Each time you leave
Because darling I'm a nightmare dressed like a daydream.

Sing it, sister.

Got a long list of ex lovers
They'll tell you I'm insane
But I got a blank space baby
And I'll write your name

Not a fan of Gaga's music at all, but the girl did get accepted and graduated from Juilliard. In addition to being a classically trained pianist she also can play drums and guitar.

She's not some Disney Pop creation like most of these "performers" of her generation and ilk. So, at least she's got that going for her in my humble opinion.

And for the record, I forgot who said it above, but about the only thing I watch during the Oscars is the In Memorium segment and man did we lose a lot of Hollywood history and legends this year. The day I start caring about who was wearing who (designer) on the red carpet, is the day that I will consider myself brain dead and I beg one of you to dispatch me Walking Dead style.

Julliard? A little pretentious for my tastes.

I had no interest in Lady GaGa until I saw her on the Stevie Wonder special recently and she completely knocked a Stevie Wonder song out the park both with her vocals and piano playing.

GaGa signing Stevie

Luke Bryan part in Florida Georgia Line's "This Is How We Roll."

This is the best argument for pretension ever.

Well, that's pretty bad ass.

The thing is, in a world where most pop singers need 21 people to write their music and a mountain of auto-tune gear to not sound awful live (I'm looking at you Kanye and Beyonce), a chick that can be a pop star and then break out legit tribute material for soul and broadway stuff with equal ease is pretty unusual.

I'm not a "fan" but I know talent when I see it. Respect.

People watch the Oscars because they are fans of movies. This was actually a very good years for movies not involving video games or comics books. The Theory of Everything, Boyhood, Whiplash and Birdman are all great films. Great performances and stories.
