Recently got to sample a few ...

Hakushu (like a islay - smokey) least favorite.
Hibiki - really liked. It's aged in a different kind of barrel - some sort of Japanese oak.
Yamazaki - wow. Could drink this everyday.

All pretty expensive I understand, and evidently hard to get much a selection in most of the us.

Anyone else had any experience?

Hibiki is the only one I've tried and I thought it was quite good.

I had some 18 year old Suntory Yamazaki. I wasn't a fan but a lot of the people I was with loved it.
 
I just read about hibiki, it's also aged in some type of cask that previously held some sort of plum liquor. Probably where the sweetness comes from.

Yamazaki is fairly common in Oklahoma. If you are in OKC, Byrons always has it. The 12 year is affordable. Hell, the 18 year is affordable for an 18 year. I'm a fan.
