OU, OSU 'neck and neck' for five-star guard Bryce Thompson
Lon Kruger, Bill Self and Shaka Smart spent the first day of the fall recruiting period at Booker T. Washington High School in Tulsa.
They were there to see Bryce Thompson, the top player in the state, work out. Oklahoma, Kansas and Texas are among the seven finalists to land the 6-foot-5 combo guard. Thompson is the 18th-ranked prospect in the country, according to the 247Sports composite.
Mike Boynton wasn’t there, but the Oklahoma State coach had already made his appearance. Boynton visited Thompson just after midnight Monday morning, Rivals analyst Corey Evans reported. OU and OSU are in a recruiting tug of war to keep the five-star prospect in state.
“I would say neck and neck right now,” Rod Thompson, Bryce’s dad, said of the Bedlam battle. “I've got family members that are OU, and other family members that are OSU. If one had the lead, I would be like, 'OU is in favor, or OSU is in favor,' but I think they're definitely great options.”
In addition to the four Big 12 schools, North Carolina, Michigan State and Arkansas made Thompson’s final seven.
“I'll be honest, probably two, three years ago — even a year and a half ago — I would've said that he's gonna stay in the state,” Rod Thompson said. “That there's no question. But now, the closer we get, his improvement, I think it opened it up. He's not opposed to going out of state.”
Thompson visited Texas two weekends ago. He was in Chapel Hill, North Carolina last weekend. Thompson has upcoming visits set for Michigan State and Oklahoma State. He visited Oklahoma just before school was let out in the spring.
Thompson is expected to make his decision sometime between November and January.
