I just took a quick gander at the 2020 F150's and the base price of the cheapest F150 available is $28,495. Now that's list, but it's almost double what they were back in 2011. Now I see why they discount the crap out of them. It does have a backup camera and auto start/stop which I hate. ...looks like the trans has 3 modes as well...normal, tow/haul, sport. That's it.

Yeah, vehicles in general have gotten pretty crazy. More tech, more safety, more standards = more $$$.

a few hundred bucks for some electronic gadgetry doesn't equate to those kind of increases.

Not sure what you think is just a few hundred dollars. The little electronic device that converts your fob signal to the electrical signal to open you locks is like $1000 bucks alone (forget what it is called). Sounds simple, but can be expensive.

The extra safety research and changes adds to the cost. Backup camera system is probably pretty expensive, too.

Sure, these shouldn't equal a near double price, but it is what it is.

add that FOB post delivery for $300. Backup camera for $41. I know what you're trying to say and adding that stuff after production is even more expensive than doing it coming down the assembly line.

Not sure where you got $41 from for a back up camera system? Same with the FOB? Mine went out in my truck a couple of years ago and I was quoted over $1000 for the part alone. Just saying that simple things that aren't readily seen can be pretty pricey. But, I am right there with you in saying that truck (vehicles in general really) are getting expensive.

BOM cost for all of the chips and boards for every computer module in a vehicle should not exceed a few thousand dollars.

The cost comes from a few places...

Writing the FW
Testing the entire system and ensuring it’s safe (I.e. it always works and then follows proper failsafes when it doesn’t)
Middle men - all that tech comes from third parties. Some of the suppliers get stuff from even lower level suppliers, etc.

There’s a reason Apple is vertically integrated. They dramatically increase their margins.

agree way too much unneeded crap on there. Just too much technology. It's not overwhelming but close. Some of it is good. You can go online and get a backup camera from Amazon for $41. I added the key fob for like $150 or so. I bought a very basic F150 back in 2011. I have to have it because I do haul crap and stuff. It was a stripped down version, even roll up windows. I think it listed for $17,000 and I got it just north of $15,000. There are more standard features, no doubt, but not double the price value. My brother used to be in the auto parts business...sold a lot of add on stuff. These manufactures get that figured out and start incorporating those improvements on the assembly line or as optional equipment. Put them out of business. It's the way of the world. It's not that hard to incorporate these electronic improvements. Once the first guy does it, the rest of the sheep follow and it gets cheaper and cheaper. The old saying "first one through the wall always gets bloody" is very true.

Yeah, it's almost like they're marketing bigger trucks to a more "luxury accustomed" clientele and it kills the rest of us. Yes, we all love the bells and whistle, but many things I don't need or want. It is hard to find an optioned truck to my specs that in turn do not have 50 things I don't care for...

Wife thinks my next truck should be a 3/4 ton because she eventually wants to get a horse(s) and or maybe get some head of cattle like her dad used to have (shorthorns). I'm a city guy and could figure out some of the crap, but jeebus they're expensive as piss.

You can easily pull a horse trailer with a half ton as long as you aren’t driving in the mountains.

The price of the 3/4 has become insane. In 2011 I bought a 2008 Chevy diesel and that was reasonable around the mid 20’s, but still a fair amount of money.

Glad I’m not looking for something like that anytime soon.

She wants 5th wheel/gooseneck...doubt 1/2 tons would do that safely.

It’s possible to do it from what I understand, but you are quickly heading into 3/4 ton zone. Especially if you are talking multiple animals.
Unfortunately, for me, I think she IS talking about multiple lol (didn't mean to hijack thread)

Because you were quoted a part from the manufacture . Look at third party offerings, it does not cost that much.

I would've had I know what the part was called (still don't) :p I got over not being able to use my fob now, so no biggie.

F250 6.2L in a STX or XLT package depending on what options you want. They will do anything you are looking to do and hold their value well. Plus you won’t have own a Dodge.

This thread sparked something and I wanted to ask the folks with backup cameras. My pickup has a back up camera. I can’t use it to back up for crap and still back into a spot the old fashioned way. I guess it says something about my brain function (or lack there of) but I just either don’t trust it or can’t get it to translate in a way that makes me comfortable.

I'd get the diesel (a lovely $9k option...)

It has taken me a while to get used to it, but I do use it quite a bit.

I still use mirrors though. I have a Yukon XL presently and had an F150 before that. The mirrors on the Yukon are terrible and are one of my only major complaints about the vehicle. It really seems like they are trying to force you to use the tech by giving you crappy mirrors.

I use mine all the time, never had a problem with it on my fusion.

This will solve all your problems

They do crap for me when backing a trailer. For some reason my brain won't switch over to the camera. I fell like a new driver trying to use the camera to back up a trailer. I just use my mirrors and swing that thing right into place. Now where the camera helps for a trailer is backing up the ball to the hitch. About only thing it is useful for IMO. I do like the camera for everything else like backing up in a parking lot and stuff it adds an extra layer of safety IMO.

Cars is ridiculous now. And is about the quickest way to make money disappear. Midsize SUV’s are kids 40s. Large suv is 50s to 60s. Any truck that isn’t barebones your looking at 50s and 60s. And F250 and 350s are out of this world. Fastest way to lose about 25 grand in value. If I were looking at something now it would be a ram. Cheaper price tag and better gas mileage. I don’t know if I ever buy new again.

Can't beat the resale/trade in value on the 250 diesel.

But you would have to own a nasty Ford.

Speaking of the key fob deal, I bought an after market device to allow me to start my 2017 Jeep Rubicon remotely. I bought this Rubicon as a certified pre-owned vehicle from Melton’s in Claremore. It was a basic Jeep Rubicon from 2017, meaning it has everything a Rubicon needs aside from nav, backup camera and remote start. The remote start is one thing I dig when it’s cold outside. It was on Amazon, easy install, click the door lock button three times, boom. Engine.

Now, about the cost of cars...I love Jeeps of course, and so I wanted to see what the Gladiator truck was all about...test drove a Rubicon Gladiator. Good Lord. Actually rides quite well for a Jeep and a truck, had plenty of room, and all the goo gahs. For $55,000....ouch.

And as far as pulling, I found a 1979 Dodge Power Wagon Pierce Mini Pumper fire truck. Look em up if you like. Kinda cool. The pump works, so I can use it to keep water close by for bonfires on the back acreage. And pull a trailer when I need to take the tractor to another site. Ample storage for tools, extra hoses, a ladder, and it’s full time 4 wheel drive!! It’s an old Dodge 360 V8, but that’s ok, I don’t need a diesel for what I pull....

anyway, up late, and bored.
