I somewhat agree with Gundy that splitting into two full teams would make it hard for a scrimmage. However, there are other options to make a Spring Game work for players, coaches, and fans. For example, a fun & unique Spring Game could be created where it puts the offense against the defense.

This type setup would create excitement and buzz amongst the fans and players alike. Plus, this setup would help the coaches evaluate players better against similar competition levels. In addition, on the last three drives at the end of the game it would allow those players who shined to compete against each other in a high-stakes-winner-take-all environment.

For this setup scoring would be normal for the offense, but the defense would be given 2 points every time the offense had to punt on 4th down, turnovers would be worth 4 points if the defense didn't score from the turnover (fumbles, interceptions, or a turnover on downs), and offensive & defensive touchdowns would still be worth the same (6 points).

FIRST HALF (repeat 3 times)

1st, 5th, 9th Drives
1st team Offense vs 1st team Defense

2nd, 6th, 10th Drives (Offense vs Defense)
1st team (8 players) + 2nd team (3 players)

3rd, 7th, 11th Drives (Offense vs Defense)
1st team (4 players) + 2nd team (7 players)

4th, 8th, 12th Drives (Offense vs Defense)
1st team (0 players) + 2nd team (11 players)

SECOND HALF (repeat 3 times)

1st, 4th, 7th Drives (Offense vs Defense)
2nd team (8 players) + 3rd team (3 players)

2nd, 5th, 8th Drives (Offense vs Defense)
2nd team (4 players) + 3rd team (7 players)

3rd, 6th, 9th Drives (Offense vs Defense)
2nd team (0 players) + 3rd team (11 players)

Last 3 Drives with Offense vs Defense
Offense (Top Performers 1st, 2nd, 3rd team)
vs
Defense (Top Performers 1st, 2nd, 3rd team)

Rules For Last 3 Drives
- all scoring is doubled
- to start the game the offense and defense will each have 3 captains
- each player captain gets to decide who plays and all substitutions for 1 drive each

Winning Team
- receives steak, lobster, crab, etc.

Losing Team
- must serve winning team
- only gets to eat beans and rice for dinner
- must run bleachers every morning at 6am until school is out (there needs to be good consequences for losing as part of the motivation for the players)

Hopefully this spring will include a new setup like this or something to benefit the fans and add excitement to the program heading into the summer. In 2019, the Oklahoma State offense averaged 2.46 points per drive.
