I’ve learned World Cup watching is much less stressful if your team isn’t in it....just enjoy the game in front of you with no thinking about how it impacts your team.

You could just make up villain scenarios for an excuse to put the hammer down. Nobody has to know you're making excuses. Hell, nobody is brave enough to talk to really drunk soccer fans. You might get your neighborhood burned to the ground.
