I Hope This Is True

Doesn’t sound like education to me...sounds like selective indoctrination. And reporting teachers who don’t agree with his viewpoints? For what, termination or extermination?

Yes, the “reporting teachers” is potentially troubling. Reporting to whom? And for what purpose? You ask good questions. On the other hand if I were a parent of a school age child I would appreciate knowing if a teacher was preaching the gospel of Marxism. Marxism is a seriously flawed philosophy that has wreaked disaster at every turn. So eliminating it from its primary roll in education is a very good thing. A very good thing.

I disagree...the marketplace of ideas doesn’t mean shutting down certain shops/aisles because you don’t like the product. Don’t like, don’t buy.

Here’s an example of how Marxism works, or should work, against capitalism in this country. Did you follow the Sears layoffs? Thousands of working class received little-to-no severance package (and can’t pay bills because of it) when the company fought tooth-and-nail for 7-figure packages for its executives.

Is that right?

This is an example of you trying to knock down a straw man of your own making. Marxist ideology has taken control of education across the globe. Marxist ideology is rooted in a deeply flawed understanding of human nature. In the marketplace of ideas Marxism deserves to be ridiculed. Mocked as an evil presentation of how society should operate. Marxism as the driving force of education has no more validity than Nazism. It’s fine to be taught as an example of what not to do. It is horrifying to think it is the primary emphasis.

I’m at a loss on your Sears example. In what way does it show how Marxism works? Marxism is not in the equation. Are you meaning it as an example of how capitalism is evil? The story behind Sears’ bankruptcy is a great lesson in what happens to a company that fails to innovate. In economics it’s called creative destruction. Sears rested on its laurels and watched WalMart eclipse it. And then along came Amazon and Sears was doomed. It’s part and parcel of how society in the form of consumers advances. I have no knowledge of how people were paid, so I’ll not respond to that.

Ironically I watched a show on tv the other night in which they talked about how the Sears catalog was banned in Soviet Russia because the government didn’t want its people to see the array of goods available to people living in a capitalist society.

The Sears layoffs severances are a prime example of crony capitalism. You’ve rarely, if ever, had anything negative to say about capitalism, which dilutes your argument against socialism/Marxism

Well that makes no sense. I rarely - actually never - say anything negative about free market capitalism because I recognize it as the only economic system that is consistent with individual liberty, the only economic system that raises people out of poverty and into prosperity. I am totally opposed to crony capitalism and have raged against it many times on this board. But the Sears bankruptcy is not an example of crony capitalism. It’s an example of a company that lost it’s way.

I’m not talking about their bankruptcy...I’m talking about the severance packages that thousands of working class didn’t get, yet 7 figures for executives.

Well, as I said earlier I do not know anything about severance packages or 7 figure payouts, so I’ll take your word for it. But I’m not in a position to comment about something about which I know nothing.

I will say this, however: the lack of severance packages and 7 figure payouts are not an example of crony capitalism. Incompetence, probably. Greed, almost certainly. Crony capitalism on display, not even close.

Greed and crony capitalism go hand in hand. Arguing otherwise is nonsense.

CSCOTT, we’re having a good discussion. I’m really enjoying it. It’s so pleasant to talk with you when you eliminate all the lol’s and things. However, with this comment you seem to be swinging for the fence without knowing where the fence is. Crony capitalists are most certainly greedy bastards, but all greedy people are not crony capitalists.

Yeah, Sears isn't an example of crony capitalism even considering tax breaks they've received for their corporate headquarters over the years. Poorly run? You bet. Desperately stupid to try to turn things around by giving out big bonuses to keep the same idiots on board that helped Sears become a has been over the years? Yep.

If you want a great example of crony capitalism, check out Solyndra. Another example is Trump's Mar a Lago these days.

You have to keep people around to get it reorganized or sold. That takes people beyond store employees. To keep people to do the work to reorganize or sell, you have to pay big bonuses. Otherwise, they are gone. Simply handing the keys over to new people without current employees is a disaster waiting to happen.

As for the store employees, I’d like to see more facts but it sounds pretty shitty.

Shitty is an understatement.

If they were better employees they would have worked for a better company.

Does everyone see how fvcking stupid this clown is?

Did you not take an economics class in your life? This is basic shit. Sears has been failing for years. The best employees get the best jobs at the companies they want to work for. There is a reason you are the most educated person in the kitchen. Why do you think you aren’t working for a major newspaper or tv station? You suck that’s why.

Is he claiming that Sears paying 7 figure bonuses to retain executives and not paying severance to employees who worked at stores that closed is crony capitalism or something equally as stupid? That one is still on your plate. You're going to have to eat every last bit of that before anyone is going to buy your "look over there" routine.

Aren’t you still unemployed and laying around on your ass? lol...what a waste of talent...oh wait...you have none haha

Sorry not happening...I don’t give a shit what your personal definition of crony capitalism entails. Deal with it.

It isn't my definition, Toon. I'm sorry you're outraged, but outrage doesn't change definitions.

Yes, it's shitty, but having been involved in the bankruptcy of a small computer mfg. early this century, no one wins. Sears in its prime was an icon of American business, but IMHO, mgmt. completely dropped the ball re: you name it. Still doesn't help those who lost jobs, but fer gawds sake, this handwriting was on the wall years ago.

Stupid shit like this is why socialists are winning elections in this country.

Should AOC be ridiculed for calling out Congress for getting a better health plan for cheaper than she paid as a working class? Fvck no, she should be celebrated for shit like that...yet she’s booed on Capitol Hill by Republicans.

I wonder why...
