HS Recruiting News

What’s the skinny on him other than the stats? #10 at his weight seems low for a top 25 overall kid…and not a name I recognize for us…clearly building an askren connection (even though he’s an idiot outside of wrestling) could be cool, I’m just surprised I hadn’t heard more or why’s he’s so low at his weight class
I've been told that 149 will be his weight so the 157 projection is a little misleading in the rankings. The only guys ranked ahead at 149 are Jordyn Raney and Sam Herring (and Herring is only ranked two spots ahead on the big board)

And like most Askren kids, he’s just getting started imo. That has been the message from the AWA camp for sure too. I know it's not the norm but Mitch M was ranked 59 P4P and #11 at his weight. KOT was ranked high but PSU chose Facundo over him. Keckeisen was overlooked for other top guys at the weight. AWA kids have a tendency to be powder kegs just waiting for a light.

Will Askren be considered as the next Missouri coach when Brian Smith retires in the near future?
I might be misremembering, but I think Askren has previously said college coaching doesn’t appeal to him. His brother Max is the name I’ve seen Wisco fans throw out as Bono’s replacement.

I think I watched a podcast where he sluffed off being a college coach. He said in lots of words that he doesn't want to run a college program.

I kind of wish he did, because he would do a great job and has quite a bit of name recognition.

Hard to be super into crypto and whatever else he’s into and also be a coach AND administrator of a D1 program.

I'm actually surprised Jax hasn't signed with you guys yet. If you don't get him, it will be the first one that got away from DT who he had a very serious shot at getting. Must be tough being a recruit like Jax with two legends whispering in each ear.

This may not get great play on this board, but the program recruiting vibe I get at Iowa is similar to how it was in Stillwater the last few years. Still a destination program but lost some of its mojo and stopped getting the steady stream of high end recruits to sustain the program. Just on that basis, I tend to lean away from Iowa in the recruiting sweepstakes these days because there are better places for a recruit to go to be on a storied program AND lock in to an RTC with its many training partners. NIL may change that equation slightly but probably not by much.

One of the reasons is he is a junior and there are lots of seniors rated above him in his weight class and these seniors at any weight class are not a part of his ranked class.

I don’t see a problem🙈

I partially agree with you. I feel that OK State still got some really solid recruits, but the issue was that they were not developing into what everyone thought they would. A lot of talent, that never got any better once they got to OK State.

Askren has been asked by Brian Smith to be his AHC (which would certainlly coincide with being the HC one day if he was interested) before and Ben declined. He has a ton of other interests and has made plenty of money (a lot from crypto also lol)

He has joked about being the Iowa HC at the price of their facilities though so basically he implied he might be interested for a money whip but it would have to be something outrageous

Is he at risk of being a bit of a tweener in college? Maybe too big to be a consistent/healthy 197, but not quite big enough to be a stout HWT? Need thoughts from smarter people than me.

Yeah, of course Schultz is only 6 foot. But Jude doesn't look to have the same frame?

He actually does look like a kid that can get to 97.
We have a real need for a young HWT but not much of a need for a 197. Mocco must be taller than 6 feet tall and has the potential to fill out especially with college nutrition and college weight program. However, I would sign Correa because it is not a certainty that we get Mocco or the Iowa kid. If we get 2 of these kids, the best wrestles. I really hope that Merrill will wrestle in the Southern Scuffle next month to see where he stands with top 197's.
