HS football anthem protests

Teenagers pushing the boundaries. Well, dumb asses, you were warned. Time to pay up.

We're a strange species, the way we are so motivated by subjective symbolism.

Like voting for a woman because she’s a woman?

(Seriously, I wonder how many people did that and how many would admit to it. Well, we’re off the rails now!)

Sure. Now imagine if there were 45 straight women elected and then women complained that men based their vote on sex.

Now imagine there were over 300,000 white people who died to end slavery and then descendants of slaves complained that the flag stands for oppression!

There you go. They have a totally different subjective view of the symbol because they have a different perspective. So?

A different perspective, indeed. Why not hate the first civilized society that ended slavery?

Are we arguing for a reason or just to be arguing?

Edit: I don’t want that to come off as more of a negative than I meant it to be. It wasn’t meant to be an angry question.

I find it ironic that those who are first to recognize the symbolism of the confederate flag towards slavery and oppression are the last to recognize that symbolism of the American flag to the valor of those who have fought and died to protect it.

I may not agree with it, but they have a valid perspective. You're right about the sacrifices in the Civil War. Your ignoring of the previous 100 years and next 100 years is what i can't figure out.

Nah, not ignoring anything. I just don’t encourage anybody to live in the past. To a large degree, we are all victims to the extent that we want to be.

William Henry Carney was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for bravery in the Civil War. A former slave, I believe, Carney was shot several times after he grabbed the flag from and injured comrade and kept marching. He kept going after being shot repeatedly, apparently because he respected and loved his flag and country and what it stands for.

This country needs more William Henry Carneys and less Colin Kaepernick.

Well make up your mind. Are we living in the past or not, Mr. Civil War legacy all about respecting an antique son? And are they supposed to reject victimization or not? You understand that's what the objectors are doing?

I don’t follow part of that, not sure if auto-correct took over there or what. Or maybe I just didn’t get enough sleep. I can see that you have no appreciation for this man’s love and sacrifice for his country, though. I’m surprised by that. I thought since you seem to prefer to live in the past, you would appreciate an historic example of a man who chose not to be a victim.

Whatever.

Want to talk about Kaepernick instead?

I don't know anything about your civil war hero -- if I were his life coach I would've told him to not get shot over a piece of fabric. Again, people should quit putting so much emphasis on symbolism and more on reality. It blows my mind that people would sacrifice their lives (or expect someone else to) over a piece of cloth.

I'm still hung up on you saying I prefer to live in the past. Why am I living in the past buy you're not, when you're holding up a guy from 1864 as the example for Colin Kapernick to emulate and you're bent out of shape at people not pledging their heart over an old, shitty song? When's the last time someone put on that song just to tap their toe and enjoy it? Never. It's an old tradition to play it at sporting events. That's fine with me, incidentally, but I cant' figure out why anyone but you is living in the past. You keep bringing up the civil war.

This is just another conservative demand for conformity -- and this time over a subjective symbol. Now, you're even saying what someone has to think about a subjective symbol, as if there's only one take. Nobody has to genuflect or salute a damned thing if they don't want to, much less a song or piece of cloth.

Either you have it or you don’t. You don’t.

Wheels up, I guess... the libs strayed off message again. Let me know the next time we demand conformity from U.S. citizens.

Conformity? Are you serious?

It’s the left that demands I buy a certain insurance policy. It’s the left that tells me what kind of light bulb I must purchase. It’s the left that requires me to purchase a certain type of gasoline. I could go on, but you get the idea.

Or maybe you just don’t.

Damn, Sys, you had me right up to the very end. You can't seriously think liberals don't demand conformity, do you?

Insurance: So you don't victimize someone when you hurt them behind the wheel? That wasn't libs -- that's been around forever. Or so I don't have to pay for your health care when you show up at the E.R. with the flu? That was thought up by a right wing think tank and enacted by a republican governor my friend.

Gasoline: Guess smog, acid rain and endless carbon is better than costing you an extra $.03 per gallon, huh?

Yes -- all have reasons that limit other people's exposure for your choices. What exactly is your exposure if a guy doesn't put his hand in the right place during a song?

Hell, the DNC stated plainly in email that they want their voters uninformed and compliant. Compliance was an issue in 2016. That cat is way out of the bag.

Sigh. You’re demanding conformity. You’re defending conformity. And I don’t care who thought it up. I think Mitt Romney sucks, which likely means you think he’s awesome.

Obamacare is my future. Then you really can pay for my showing up at the hospital with the flu.

Now, regarding the football controversy, if some NFL players don’t want to stand for the national anthem, that’s their choice. I’m not telling them what to do. That’s their choice. And if I decide to not watch the games, that’s my choice. See how we all get to make our own choices? Everybody’s happy! Where’s my demand for conformity?
