How Coach sees people changing weights

Look at Clark Glass of OU last year. He tried to make the cut to 157 middle of the year and it absolutely did not work out. And I hated that for him as he is a senior.

Yeah, ideally weight changes should be decided in the offseason to allow for the necessary training adjustments.

A couple of other thoughts...

Planning and roster construction are obviously important, but nailing down exact weights (for 4 years) during the recruiting process has to be really difficult. Dean Heil was recruited as a 133 and struggled making the weight as a redshirt freshman. When he was allowed to move up to 141 things took off. Balancing the team and individual needs requires some flexibility on both ends.

As others have stated before, I hope we are making plans now for the next 2 years. I'd like to see Boo Lewallen and Tristan Moran to 149, Jonce Blaylock and Geo Martinez to 157, and Joe Smith to 165 while redshirting.

While that sounds like "my way (weight) or the hiway" we have a long history of guys that have moved up a weight. Also those that have moved down a weight, often times because it is the only way they will get to see the mat.

Have no problems with either-as long as the kid knows what is expected, and the process, up front, I think this is the best way.

And Micco, I certainly agree about Glass. Ruined not only his season but also Barnes.

Look at Todd Chesbro. Moved up TWO weights his senior year from 150 to 167 and became a National Finalist.

It could have been taken out of context or exaggerated, but I think we should have a better approach to recruiting. Again about 7 of the top 10 wrestlers for 2018 have committed already in fact Penn.St has 4 of the top 10 and may be favored to get Beard also. I think that we can coach with penn. St and certainly Ohio State but I don't think we are recruiting like we need to. I hope we are making positive changes. Next year we will be competing for 3rd but the next year we could possibly compete for the championship especially if we get a top HWT like the Indiana kid who was the star of flow nationals. With this last years recruiting freshmen looking bad I think this year we needed more than Fix and Gfeller especially since they are in weight classes we were already strong with young talent, We need a 57, a 74, a 97 and a HWT( we need now). 20019 we have the makings of a great lineup 25 Fix fr., 33 Brock jun, 41 Gfeller frosh, 49 Lewallan jun., 57 Smith jun., 65 Rogers sen, 74 Smith sen, 84 Moore soph, 97 Weigel sen. Hwt weak. If we get a very good HWT maybe we could get 35. These are just my thoughts on who would start. Piccinini, Martinez, Marsden or Blaylock could also start. Next year we can compete for 3rd like we did this year. I would sure feel better if we had a HWT coming in and a couple of the top 2018 recruits. I read an article in the O'Colly about coach Smith going 1 year at a time and getting another title. I hope that he makes the proper evaluation and makes changes. I would like to see 35 before I am dead.

There is an interview on Flo with coach Smith after this year's medal rounds. When asked what Penn State has that OSU does not, he jokes "it would be nice to spread some recruits around". Then he says a bit more seriously "we need to do a better job recruiting".

Recruiting the top pound-for-pound athletes is key to winning the team title at nationals. I think PSU, tOSU and Iowa realize this and I hope OSU is making changes to land these wrestlers.

I don't think they haven't been trying to land these guys as we have landed our fair share in the recent past. PSU and to a degree OhSt have just been landing more of them, especially PSU.

Location and the strength of theIt RTC's is what those programs have going for them currently and we can only control one of those.

We are going to need to hope that more top level guys come from this part of the country.

PSU may be tough to keep up with from a recruting standpoint for awhile but we should be able to keep pace with Iowa and OhSt and an argument can be made that we have.

I think the top recruits will go where they have the best chance to succeed. Penn State has wrestlers from California, Texas and Minnesota on their roster, with verbals from Oregon and Arizona.

I've seen various ideas on the boards about what might improve recruiting:

(1) Offering more scholarship $ to fewer wrestlers
(2) Expand the RTC
(3) Improve the facilities / wrestling room
(4) Visit high schools of top recruits to watch practice
(5) Be more active with twitter
(6) Do a better job advertising / promoting the program

That said, I still think wrestlers go to a place where they are comfortable and that will help them achieve their goals. I also think it would be a big plus if Dieringer and Fix start making senior world teams and winning medals.

Here's hoping. Go Pokes!
