Police in India raided a call center which apparently had been the primary source of those scammers. They placed over 500 employees under arrest.

Perhaps now I won't get 3 to 4 of these calls per week left on my answering machine.

I got in the habit of hanging up. Then I got into the habit of dragging it out over the phone until they got pissed. I have had some profane language thrown my way. Especially from the ones letting me know my Windows computer has a virus.

I've been beset by these idiots for years.

Anymore I just don't answer out of state calls and hang up on bounced local calls but a fe times they caught me at the right / wrong time and I've unleashed the most vulgar, racist venom on them I could scrape up from the depths of my soul.

Have to admit it was cathartic but it just resulted in more calls.

Do they pull this off with strong Hindi accents?

Voicemail is a glorious thing. I don't answer a call if I don't know the number. 98% of numbers I don't recognize are scams, surveys, politicians, and charities. 1% are wrong numbers. The last 1% are people I actually need to talk to.

If your number under 'attack' is a business number, I feel for you. It's costly in many facets for a small biz to change phone numbers, which is about the only remedy and a temporary one at that.

I answered one last week. Was walking away from game one of the Rangers-Jays back to the car. Already not happy from the beat down the Rangers got, I was primed. Knowing they are trying to scam our seniors, I answered in an old man voice. Stupid ass told me his name was 'Calvin Johnson' from the IRS. I played along for a minute, asking of he was legit. Assured me he was. Then I laid into him like a sailor. Basically yelling at him asking if he is the same Calvin that just retired from the NFL? Proud of what you do? He got confrontational with me, I told him to "Eat a bag of d*cks, and if you ever call me again, I will find you and beat your *ss." Haven't had a call since. IM A MAN. IM ALMOST 38.

That's exactly how I play it as well. Have a generic outgoing message that helps quickly identify if they know that I am NOT M.Sgt_____ ________ as my mom left my dad's name on the public listings for the number, despite the fact he died in 1963. It's always a hoot to get a call from someone insisting they know him or that a neighbor has recommended him to receive some "gift" or something. Those I love to screw with.....
