Gotta say this is not the elephant I was expecting when I saw this thread title from NZ
Interesting how one was also in power about 4 times as long as the other
Also this is only true if you take extreme liberties with what it means to kill. Liberties that for some reason are only taken when we talk about communists.
Also one person killed exactly as many people as he wanted to, the other only killed as many people as he could before he was stopped by the USSR.
What is there to talk about?

I'll bite. How is Mao Zedong history's elephant in the room? He's not perfect, but he did drive imperialism out of China and set the country on the path of the China we see today. From a historical perspective, he was a pretty brilliant guy.

Yeah that book is riddled with factual and methodological errors.
Few people bring up (these days) Eastern Europe’s descent into communism after WW2 ended — and their history.
Even in Europe it rarely gets talked about, and movies about it are rarely made.
I recently got this book on it — haven’t started it yet, but it’s supposed to be outstanding.

Because socialism and communism has extremely widespread support amongst millennials — a larger population group than baby boomers.
This stuff is not going away, despite what people believed when the USSR crashed in the early 90s.
