He gave a speech on June 16, 1918 in Ohio calling for resistance to the military draft and opposition to WWI. He exercised his freedom of speech and was punished for it.
The law he was arrested under (Sedition Act of 1918) was repealed by Congress in 1920.
Eugene Debs, if alive today, would strongly oppose the neo-fascism of Trump as well as Trump's January 6 insurrection and attack on our democracy. Debs was a strong defender of democracy and he would quickly recognize the threat that Trump and those who think like him are to our nation and our democracy.
