After game 1, I saw a lot of gnashing of teeth regarding play calling. A lot of complaints that we didn't throw the ball downfield enough and that we ran right up the middle too much. We also ran too often on first down.
In game 2, we started the game by throwing something like 8 passes in our 1st 10 plays. It really looked like we were trying to pass to set up the run after the opposite did not work in game 1. Mason threw more vertical passes than he did in game 1. Throughout the game, there were really not many passes to the sideline. We also attempted to run the ball off tackle or to get the runner around the edge.
I totally understand the comments along the line of scrapping the Cowboy Back offense and going back to 4 wides, but TBH, we really haven't been using the Cowboy Backs more than we used Seaton/Jarwin througout last season. I did notice that the CBs seemed to make more of an impact when Walsh was in the game.
What I am getting at, is I felt like play calling was a huge problem in game 1, but adjustments were made to rectify that in game 2, and the offense improved (although not enough). So, I am kind of defending MY (or whoever is calling plays) here.
However, the elephant in the room is run blocking by the OL. It was bad last season and seems worse this season, but maybe Roland was just better than the RB we have this season. I still think that there are ways to mask an OL that is terrible at run blocking, and I feel like we saw some of those adjustments in last night's game.
However, what I am really wondering is if the CBs are all but useless when MR is playing QB. He isn't throwing to them much. They obviously are not making a positive contribution on running plays. Maybe they are part of the reason he is getting time to throw, but if not, then we are basically playing 10 on 11 when we are on offense. When Walsh was in the game, Seaton/Jarwin did something positive and noticeable on most plays. It rarely happened when Rudolph was in the game.
Is the CB offense just not going to work with MR's skills? Is it just going to take more time?
