Good

The good is pretty easy, we won. The sad thing is I actually had my doubts if we would in the second half but a win is a win.

Offensively I'll add Rudolph as a good. He missed some throws that he will need to make in a few weeks but he was smart with the ball and didn't put us in many bad situations. After an early sack he was more aware and was able to scramble a bit to move the chains.

I'll also add Carson and Childs. Considering all we asked them to do was run up Lundblade's backside they ran hard and allowed us to eat up some clock late (which once again is just sad that we were in that position). Was impressed with Carson's hands as well. I'd like to see him used a bit more as an option in the passing game.

On defense I'll give a good to Daniels, for his first game he made plays. Hopefully we can keep him fresh for later in the season. The DE's did ok, put pressure on the QB but lost containment a few times as well.

Sinor - Even is one bad punt ended up getting a nice roll.

Run Defense - Need to do a better job on QB containment but on base running plays they were very stout only giving up about 2.5 yards per carry.

Bad

Run blocking - still no push and way too many misses. I haven't had a chance to watch it back yet but the Oline in the Longest Yard didn't ole worse than whomever missed his guy on 3rd and goal from the 1 before JW came in to score.

Defense - For as much as the offense was out of sorts the defense early in the game did them no favors by not being able to get CMU off the field. It almost felt like Spence had turned into Oprah with the pass coverage "YOU get a 10 yard cushion and YOU get a 10 yard cushion!!" In the second half things picked up and we had 4 straight great series. Statistically things ended up not looking too bad but for as good as they played late, they were equally as poor for 2 quarters and one series.

Ugly

Offensive play calling. There never seems to be any rhyme or reason for our play calling. We called all those quick lateral passes early but never did anything off of them. Yes I understand that you don't want to show everything in the first game but that's just one example of plays never seeming to be building up to anything. Also I can't think of one time where we've sped up the tempo and really caught the other team off guard. Most of the time it just seems like we call a play that seems rushed and never seems to work.

Tackling - This goes along to the first half woes on defense but guys were over running the ball and not wrapping up. Flowers is the one that sticks out the most but there were plenty of others that fall into this category.

Grogan - No big shocker, when you miss two FG's in a close game that's going to get you on the ugly list. I think he will be fine but not his best showing tonight. He'll get it fixed.

My grill - Dumb thing was over run by wasps who decided to make a home in the auger so I spent the afternoon killing wasps and taking my grill apart.

Glad this day is over and we are still undefeated. Lots of work and my confidence is already shaken when it comes to our offense. I'd really like a couple of games where it looks like we actually have a game plan and can put two good halves together.
