George Will Hits The Nail On The Head

And what's the alternative. Turn a blind eye to the trade abuses, currency manipulation, IP Theft, and the myriad of other poor faith actions done by China? Just so we can abuse their slave wage labor and EPA-less environmental standards in order to get cheap stuff? It sucks that this negatively impacts our farmers. And I wish we didn't have to subsidize them, but its a sore sight better use of our tax dollars than 80% of what our government does today, so sorry that its not even in my top 100 things to bitch about our government about.

I have tremendous respect for George Will’s intellect and prolific career (disclaimer: my son worked for him for three years and have spoken to George in his very cool Georgetown office).

But.....he is a George W. Bush, John McCain old school Republican. He looks for ways to oppose Trump on anything.

“It sucks that this negatively impacts our farmers.”

You missed the point. The point is it negatively impacts all of us. First we’re taxed via the tariffs. Then we’re taxed to subsidize the farmers who are negatively impacted by the tariffs we are forced to pay in the first place. It’s whack-a-doodle economics.

So you believe we should turn a blind eye to the ills of China and the job crushing impact its had to hundreds of US industries, so we can save a few farmers from losing a market? Sounds just as whack-a-doodle.

China isn't job crushing. US fiscal policy is job crushing.

Again you are missing the point George Will (and almost every economist alive) is making. The tariffs are harming ALL OF US. Trump is punishing us - twice! - with his tariffs, and he has duped you into focusing totally on China. It’s such a typical political ploy: create an enemy for the people to turn their hatred on so they won’t notice what their own government is doing to them. It’s the same political game plan that has worked for hundreds of years. One of these days maybe people will figure it out.

Ponca, sometimes your hubris makes you an ineffective twit.

Do you think you're talking to 3rd graders?

No, just calling it like I see it. Hubris has never been the intention.

I'd suggest that you need to clear your eyes, because your "see it" is failing you.

And do you think talking to people that aren't 3rd graders like they are 3rd graders is effective?

Who has a failing vision is the reason for debate, right? As for my "tone" I suppose it's all in how a person reads the writing. You read it as condescension. I write it as stating an opinion.

All you're telling me/showing me is that your ability to talk exceeds your ability to listen.

Are you thinking I'm not listening to you or to aix_xpert? I'm pretty sure my replies to both of you have been on point. If you're saying I'm not replying to aix_xpert's diatribe against China I would tell you that's because the OP is about the harm Trump's tariffs are doing to Americans. It is aix_xpert that is attempting to shift the argument If you're thinking I'm not listening to you I would ask where I have gone wrong in my replies to you? I thought I was directly responding to your ad hominem comments. Perhaps you could clarify?

"The Trump administration unveiled a plan to disburse $16 billion to farmers as balm for wounds — predictable and predicted — from the retaliation of other nations, especially China, against U.S. exports in response to the administration’s tariffs. The $16 billion does not need to be approved by Congress because not much that presidents do nowadays needs to be. The president said the sum will be paid for by the billions of dollars the Treasury takes in from China."

Solyndra says hold my beer PD! At least millions of those billions won't end up back in campaign coffers.

Totally appropriate to compensate the farmers by the way. I wouldn't run this through congress either, as they will add useless goodies on the bill, pork if you will, to buy their personal slaves/constituents for votes.

Trump, like him or hate hi, does what he thinks is best. George W hasn't ever liked Trump and will write just about anything to discredit his actions. Think I'll start calling him a McCainnite.

Brad's not in good faith.

China's not either. Theyre the modern day Blackbeard of intellectual property.

People like you and George Will are the reason China and Mexico have been screwing this country for decades.

Yes tariffs can be painful but what you cant wrap your brain around is Trump is trying to accomplish something for the long term. It's going to take some pain to undue all the harm the so called experts and smart people have done to our economy.

You are willing to let these countries abuse us for the sake of saving a penny. Frankly you are either in denial of the economic damage that has been done by other countries or just flat out don't care.

How long are we obliged to take the prison poundings from countries that hate us and want us to settle for the back of the bus?
To change this pattern it might hurt a bit.
That Trump is doing the dirty work doesn't bother me like it does some of you.
It should've been confronted 6 presidents back.
They didn't have the balls either.

Ponca dan I cannot disagree with you because as usual you are making a logical case.
headhunter you(US) is not a victim all the time. US has screwed lots of countries over these decades.

I'm sure we've taken advantage of countries we've also invested more capital and given more charity to more countries than any country in modern history and had many of those countries spit in our faces.

You'll excuse me if I don't have sympathy for countries who take our jobs through unfair trade policies and steal our intellectual properties.

Maybe, but when there's a catastrophe, who's there with the most aid, financially and physically?
