I think he was just trying to demonstrate that he could stand up on the debate stage tongue tied and get a huge bump in the polls due to the increase in name recognition. I really don't think that can be argued. While it may have been odd it certainly isn't any stranger than half the stuff both Trump and Hillary have said and done.

I've been surprised, but I guess I really shouldn't be, at how this board which normally has a pretty good Libertarian lean has pivoted towards Trump over the past 6 weeks. He's really taken an aurhoritian stance on a lot of issues. His best buddies are Christie and Guiluani, two of the most anti civil liberties and anti personal freedom guys in the Republican Party. He's supported a religious test for immigration. I realize the hate for Hillary is strong but at least from a Libertarian viewpoint I think Trump is just as bad. I won't vote for either even if Johnson stands up on a stage sticking his tongue out like Miley Cyrus while grinding up against Robin Thicke.

I don't mind a religious test for people trying to immigrate into this country. Personally, we need to keep islamists out. Better yet, just stop any and all immigration for a long period of time. This country took no immigrants from the 1920s up until the 1960s. It's time to do something like that again. But we certainly don't need any Islamists. These folks' beliefs are completely incompatible with western-style democracy.

The law does not ban a religious test for immigrants. Truman and Eisenhower deported something like 6.4 million illegals.

The population of the US in 1955 was 152 million. 6.4 million deportees represents a little more than 4% of the population. There are 324 million in the US in 2016. Deporting 12 million illegals would also mean about 4% of the population. It's doable and been done before despite the wailing and gnashing of teeth from the amnesty crowd.
