Earl G and Tognetti and I attended the first practice today In Stillwater. Eric ran the practice as John and Zack were not there. Eric is a wonderful technician and gave some great pointers today. About an hour of live takedowns and rideouts in three man groups and several wrestlers were impressive for this early in the season. Dean Heil looks very big but has certified at 133. He was matched up with Kindig for the most part and gave a good account of himself. Chandler Rogers looks very good. Dierenger was not there today but about the only wrestler I noticed missing. Preston Weigel would win the award for best physique. He has muscles on his muscles. Austin Shafer looks tall and strong. All in all saw some good action for a first day of practice. I think Eric said there were 39 wrestlers in the room. Tyler Caldwell and Jon Morrison were there and they are in freestyle training. They are coaching the Stillwater Pioneer wrestling club this year. Joe Smith was in the room and mostly wrestled with Jon Morrison. Morrison actually looks bigger than Joe.

I was very impressed with practice and this group works very hard.

I would say Marsteller is like most other freshman when they make the transition to college. He will find his way and dominate in college like he did in high school. He has not hit that point yet however. One practice also does not mean much. He was holding his own but not dominating the other wrestlers around his weight. I want to see him at the Oklahoma City Open and judge his progress at that time.
He is incredibly strong and has thighs like tree trunks. Very hard to score on but at this practice at least he did not stand out like you would expect. Certainly not down on him and he has all the skills, strength and stamina to dominate. At the end of the practice he was the most impressive in calisthenics including pull ups where he put most others to shame.

great update. from what i got from the post is that chandler rogers looked the best in practice out of all the freshman. i believe chandler is going to be a really good cowboy recruit for us in the near future. he is solid in all positions and is a pinner just like his brother but i believe a little more polished than jordan. he actually was the last person in the u.s. to beat anthony valencia a few months back. i think i'm more high on rogers and bless than i am marsteller. but i hope they all turn out to be multiple all americans and ncaa champs.

As Eric pointed out, Chandler has been in Stillwater for over a year (going to high school here) which has put him ahead of the other incomng recruits as for training. I will not name names because there was quite a few other incoming freshmen that looked really good. The talent in the room is crazy, from what i hear a very close group and seem to enjoy each others company.

Any odds on favorites of who the room leaders will end up being? Great ones are invaluable as we've seen....

Alex Dieringer and Josh Kindig, both have stepped up in that Department since Caldwell and Perry graduated. Both Caldwell, Perry, Morrison, Perrelli and Byers are still in the room. Plenty of help on the mat from a few grad guys.

Freshman that Mike is talking about do deserve mentioning. At a practice you can only watch a few and catch glimpses of others. My posts were not intended to exclude any of the freshman. Ryan Blees, Gary Wayne Harding, Dusty Hone, Mike Magaldo, Preston Weigel were all there and working out. They all looked good but since C. Rogers, Kyle Crutchmer, Josh Kindig, Dean Heil, Joe Smith, happened to be on mats right in front of me they got my attention more. No intent on my part to ignore the freshman but just giving highlights of what I saw.

Speaking of Eric, he mentioned that Jon Morrison and Tyler Caldwell were coaching the Stillwater Pioneer wrestling club and offered his condolences to them as one of the wrestlers is closely related to him and two of the others have the last name of Smith and I do not mean Joe. Levi and Sam Smith and the aforementioned Guerrero are all students of these two OSU Alumni. On a humorous note he did mention that Ishmael Guerrero forgot to bring his wrestling shoes to practice the other day and had to wrestle barefoot. Eric said he seemed to wrestle better unshod and maybe he ought to forget to bring shoes in the future.

This is what happens when you start mentioning wrestlers in the room and you omit several of the freshman. Hestin Lamons, Jonce Blaylock were also there and looking good. Blaylock was in the three man group with Heil and Kindig and I thought acquainted himself well for a freshman against an All-American. Tyler Mann from Arkansas was in the room but I did not recognize him and therefore did not watch him wrestle. This was the case with several of the freshman. Earl and I were going who is that a lot and misidentifying wrestlers. We did notice the 22 year old freshman Joe Schumacher from North Dakota He and Blaylock are both freshman 149 pounders. I also did not identify to watch Donald Cannon from McAlester. With 38-40 wrestlers it is impossible to watch them all. I was very impressed however with the overall tenor of the practice and all looked to be working hard.

Great information guys and thanks for sharing your thoughts it's tough to take much away but it's nice to hear any types of updates!

I did not hear where Garcia certified. I do know that Heil certified at 133 and his actual weight at certification was 138.5. He looks much bigger than his weight. Gary Wayne Harding also certified at 125. I would say he is the shortest wrestler on the team but he is solidly built and it would be a big pull to do it. Collica looks big but Eric said he certified at 141.
