Falls Creek case

From the stories I heard about Falls Creek some 40 yrs ago, up until a few I heard from my son's best friend last summer..... well let's say that nothing surprises me about goings on at that place. My son's friend was sent to camp as part of the Country Estate's Baptist Church, where the cook/rapist also originated. I'll see what I can find out from the rumor mill.

I'm just befuddled that you can take into consideration that the man is "legally" blind, but apparently the judge could not take into consideration that his sight was not so hindered that he couldn't operate knives, handle cooking utensils, stoves/ovens, etc. "Legally" blind doesn't necessarily mean you aren't sighted.

Gut should have gone to prison no doubt.

I'm still amazed that the judge accepted the plea deal.

I've appeared in Murray County before, though not before the judge in question. They have never been hesitant to put people in jail in civil cases (failure to appear, contempt, etc.), so this is very surprising that no jail time was given.

4,000 of the states teens staying in log cabins and a bunch of surrounding wilderness with little supervision for a week during summer.

Yeah I went to falls creek growing up and it was a BLAST

I'm stunned you've found fault with some facet of organized religion.

Tons,

No doubt if Boy Scout/Girl Scout camps were "integrated" rather than being single sex, then I would imagine the stories would be the same.

I do know this for a fact (from the 40+ yrs ago time frame I mentioned) at least 3 girls I went to school with came up pregnant after they attended camp at Falls Creek. This included one girl who was in 8th grade and two as sophomores.

I don't think this has much to do with religion, but rather when you put that many horny teens together in such a "loose" environment you are bound to have issues.

Of course, having a rapist on staff there was really no way impacted by the other shenanigans that have seemingly gone on forever at the camp.

If you grew up in Oklahoma and attended a Baptist church, there's a good chance you took a trip to Falls Creek.

I went 3 times. 89, 90, and 91. I enjoyed the week, played on a church softball team from Claremore. We ended up losing in a close game in the championship game to some team from Edmond I think my last year there. My goal was to try and hit it over the tabernacle that was near left field of the main diamond. Didn't help though, the Edmond team had like 9 dudes that could crush it...

Yeah, I heard all the rumors. Guys (myself included) would spend the week checking out the gals from other towns, it was like the first experience of meeting kids from other Oklahoma towns prior to college. There was a gal there that was like 18 when I was 16 that ran the photo booth. I tried hard to get her to take me with her to town for a burger, but she got cold feet lol. The most I ever got from Falls Creek was some phone numbers, but since I was pretty young the chance of meeting up with any of them were slim since most lived in places like El Reno, Mustang, and Durant, and to a kid from Claremore back then that might as well have been Alaska.

The thing I remember most was the damn heat...being in that huge outdoor wooden tabernacle with 5000 people at 6pm in the middle of the summer....man it could be uncomfortable. And I never could get any good sleep. Everyone up making noises all night, guys trying to outfart each other...yeesh.

Oh, the memories....

Fair enough, and you're right that any group of teenagers grouped together creates a high potential for hooking up, religion involved or no. To be clear, the rapist was not on staff, he was brought along for the week to cook.

I just read the Asst DA who approved/negotiated the plea deal was fired/resigned with the DA putting out a statement condemning the light sentence. Of course, my question is why didn't the DA have an approval policy in place for any felony of that nature? (rape, murder, etc.)

Plausible deniability?

Went to Falls Creek for six years or so in the 70s. It was a different time and place but I don't think there was an lot of actual sexual hook up despite what your buddies claimed when they got home. We were pretty closely supervised and quite bluntly with 6,000 to 8,000 kids in one place there wasn't much privacy. Got no idea where you would have had to sneak off too. The only possibility would have been in the cabin and that wasn't happening with our sponsors.

As for this sad story his sentence isn't even the most outrageous part of it. Apparently the Baptist are playing the it doesn't matter that she got raped because she was a whore defense against a 13 year old. I mean seriously is this 1950

"Currently pending in the civil case is a request by attorneys for the Midwest City church to question the rape victim about her "prior history of voluntary sexual activity."

Oklahoma County District Judge Aletia Timmons rejected the initial request, saying, "I don't think it has any — even a scintilla of any relevance to anything."

Attorneys for the church have asked the judge to reconsider her decision, claiming the victim talked with fellow campers about "her sexual activities and history with her then-boyfriend, including her fear that she might be pregnant with her boyfriend's child."

The church's attorneys contend that is relevant because it may have "contributed to her physical and emotional damages.""

The Baptist Bubble is real. The head of Falls Creek is an OSU grad and his wife is from Duncan and yes, we graduated the same year. Shame on the SBC on this.
