get us 7.5 team points. Three guys who AA’d every year eligible failed.....Smith, Smith and Brock. Two timer Rogers doesn’t get to go. One timer Boo is hurt. AA seeded Gfeller totally busts. Other than maybe Gfeller these are all guys that should have been near locks to AA. Wonder how many points we could have picked up with our best lineup performing to par. Think about that....5 AAs wasted. Or 4 wasted and one lost....plus an AA seed. Three of them multiple AAs. The other 2 were a juco and a guy dealing with injuries or they all would have been multiple AAs.

At least a couple need to look in the mirror and decide how much they’re willing to work and sacrifice.....or keep regressing each year....

Great job Geer. Pic really upped his game. He and Lee are neck and neck and above the other 125s. Hopefully he stays focused and gets third.

Told my wife. Everyone should have stayed at their weight. Marsden should have been plugged in at 97. I think the up and back down didn’t allow anyone to truly get comfortable at their weights.

Did not think we’d win it, but really frustrated to watch us way underperform.

Actually Joe, Kaid and Dakota wrestled above their seeds. G and Jacobi only two who were well below their seed. I was hopeful of the runnerup trophy and now hope we bring home the 3rd place trophy instead of the 4th.

You can tell Gfeller tightened up big time the moment he stepped on the mat. Yes, he's been dealing with a rib injury that's been well documented, but he was healthy enough to take shots in the big XII's. He didn't even attempt to take a shot in both matches. That tells me that the moment was too big for him. It happens sometimes for not only freshman, but for first time qualifiers as well. Hopefully he'll learn from it, and use it the next time he's wrestling for nationals.

Joe and Kaid wrestling above their seeds is immaterial. Never should have been seeded so low. They each had AA’d EVERY year. Now as upperclassmen they can’t do it. They are specifically two that need to look in the mirror and ask what they’re willing to give.

My main point is just, wow, has anybody ever had so many AA’s or Aa seeds fail to produce in one year? Probably but it’s interesting to think about.

Kaid had it pulled off and made a little league mistake. He most likely thought he needed to ride him out and didn't think critically in crunch time. Not a mistake you'd expect a seasoned guy to make...but it mirrored his season.

Geer is our new Boyd!

We are setting up for a shot at 35 in two years.

Jacobe and G were terrible. I don’t have much issue with Kaid. I thought he wrestled his tail off this tournament. Just wish he would have done that all year so he didn’t have such a crap seed.

We had a couple guys underperform. Not sure we underperformed as a team all that much, especially if we get a champ or two tonight. Not saying we over performed either.

We were seeded to score 84. We are sitting on 84 with two in the finals.

This is why Fix should take an Olympic redshirt because next year has so many question marks in our lineup and our future there is more hope if we hold unto our recruits in 20 and get Ferrari. I remember getting excited about us getting Kirkvliet who verbally committed and then left us. Next year 25 Pic, 33 Kaid, 41 Gfeller, 49 Hopefully Lewallen, 57 Sheets, 65 Wittlake, 74 Smith, 84 Montalvo, 97 Geer and HWT ? Not a National Championship threat. But our young guys really need to show something next year if we are to be a threat in a couple of years like G, Wittlake, Montalvo, Balmeceda and Witcraft. As things go for us I am not overly confident but maybe we will figure some things out and will get a few breaks.

Was that with bonus points? Also due to crappy seeds. I agree overall it wasn’t that bad if you go by how seeded. Smith, Smith and Brock should have never had those seeds.

Is Wittlake eligible for Olympic redshirt? If so, do you save him?

No 84 points was without bonus factored in.

There is still some important wrestling left. If we end the tournament with two champs I think we should all be happy. That is a damn good tournament even if we finish a couple points behind Ohio State.

End of the day we got penalized for attempting to field our best dual team all year. I agree it was a mistake on John’s part. We should have just bitten the bullet and wrestled Marsden at 197. I hope in the future he puts the tournament first.

From what I saw, I'd leave Geer at 184 the next 2 years. I don't think he will be as effective at 197, even with an off season of weight training.

Maybe get a transfer for 197. How about that guy from Cal Poly - Tom Lane - he looked pretty good. Otherwise put Marsden at 197.

Unless something has changed, the plan is to grow geer to 97.

The only downside of wrestling Mardsen at 197 is you are throwing that weight away. You are conceding you won't qualify that weight which you just can't do IMO. They thought Preston was done and so there was ample time to bump everyone up and it sure looked like it was working until Preston made a remarkable recovery.

I believe it. I guess I'm asking if others agree with that though. He just beat the #2 & #3 seeds. Is there anyone returning that would be clearly better than him at 184 next year? Maybe Max Dean?

If the weight cut is too much then it makes sense. But if it's to get Montalvo in the lineup, I don't see it.

I hear you. I think some of what happens has a lot to do with how they feel about, Hughes, Witlake and Montalvo. Going to be a really interesting year. Can Boo come back and go a full season? Can Shomers hold 57? Does Wyatt drop to 49? What happens at 41? Does Joe commit to 65 and come in ready? What do we do at heavy?

Lots of question marks.

So many question marks is why I kind of hope Fix takes his redshirt and we push him into the next classes coming through.

It sucks because I think someone could make a run at PSU next year I just don’t think it is us. Iowa looks stacked for next year.

I just wonder if our assistants went elsewhere for a few years to see how other teams train and then maybe come back.both assistants have only really wrestled and trained under 1 coach.may help us be more rounded.

I agree with you in theory. That being said, Espo & Perry have been FAR to valuable to the program to let get away.

Wrassler, You might be right about keeping Geer at 84, a lot will depend on how good Montalvo is at 84. We really don't know how good Wittlake and Montalvo are because they didn't wrestle any in 2019. What wrestling they did in the beginning of the season does not give any answers since they did not wrestle any name wrestlers. Wittlake did not place at Reno and Montalvo took 4th (not impressive for either). Hopefully they have grown a lot in the room or they won't do much next year. By the way the picture for the article about the finals clearly has Rutgers fingers wrapped tightly around Daton's headgear preventing his moving behind for the takedown and then Suriano after stopping Daton illegally and putting him in a vulnerable position gets the takedown himself. To call the stalemate in 30 second period and to not see the headgear violation in review these refs should have some consequences themselves for robbing Daton. Also for Suriano, then on TV to say that I broke Fix ( what a jerk). There is not a lot of justice in this world and we ( Daton, Cowboy Nation) sure didn't get any last night.
