The Trump campaign people are making their presence known at a county level. There are a lot of county and state republican conventions in the next month and they are trying to change rules and influence delegates to keep from having any challengers in the primary.

Just offhand, who was the last incumbent president to get a significant challenge from within their own party for re-nomination (from either party)? Was it in my lifetime (I'm 43)?

Carter maybe? I cannot remember one and I am 45. The rumblings from inside the Republican party that I hear, there will be at least one challenger in the 2020 republican primary.

HW Bush and Carter.

HW Bush and Carter.

I thought Carter might have but I was 5 in '80 so wasn't real sure. Who pushed Bush in '92? He faced Perot and Clinton, but I don't recall any significant primary challenge.
