Putnam West’s Walker commits to Cowboys

Rondel Walker sat at a table on stage at Putnam West High School surrounded by his friends, family and teammates sporting his new orangeand-black gear.

The four-star guard had just announced his commitment to Oklahoma State. Now, he was rattling off names of who he wants to join him.

Five-star recruits Cade Cunningham and Bryce Thompson.

Four-star recruit JT Thor. Three-star recruit Montreal Pena.

“We’re not done yet,” Walker said.

Walker became the Cowboys’ first commitment for the 2020 class Thursday night, choosing OSU over Arkansas, Kansas State, Texas and Virginia Tech. He unveiled an OSU shirt underneath his jacket and then picked the OSU hat on the table next to other hats.

But he revealed bigger plans that align with OSU coach Mike Boynton.

Walker intends to be a part of a bigger recruiting class, one that would rank top 5 nationally. He believes he’s the first domino.

“I just want to win,” Walker said. “I’m going to get who I need to get in there to put us in the best position to win and go from there.”

Walker is close with Cunningham, who is regarded as the top guard in the country. OSU hired Cunningham’s older brother, Cannen, as a coach this offseason. It’s a shrewd move to gain an advantage in the recruitment.

Perhaps, Walker is the next piece of the puzzle.

The two were teammates in Nike’s Elite Youth Basketball League in Dallas.

They’ve become good friends. But even Cunningham had no idea Walker was committing to OSU.

“I wanted him to be surprised just like everybody else, like none of my teammates knew,” Walker said.

“From now on, I’m going to be on him.”

Walker is a 6-foot-2, 160-pound shooting guard who averaged 23.1 points last season while leading Putnam West to the Class 6A state tournament. He was a member of The Oklahoman’s Big All-City first team and Super 5 second team.

He’s grown into a great scorer capable of playing multiple guard positions but an even more dynamic defender. Last season, he averaged more than five steals per game. He had three triple doubles, two of which he made more than 10 steals.

“That’s something that you can’t teach,” Putnam West coach Lenny Bert said.

“His best basketball is ahead of him.”
