OSU basketball: Three dismissed players charged with nine counts of property damage

Three former Oklahoma State basketball players dismissed from the team in January following a vandalism incident have been charged with nine counts of malicious injury to property.

Charges were filed against Michael Weathers, Maurice Calloo and Kentrevious Jones in Payne County Court on Wednesday. Each was charged with two felony counts of malicious injury to property for damage exceeding $1,000 and seven misdemeanor counts of malicious injury to property for damage below $1,000 for an incident that occurred Jan. 1 when they reportedly fired BB guns at cars in a Stillwater neighborhood. Imani Patterson, who in 2018 was listed as an All-American cheerleader for OSU, is facing the same charges.

A 2015 Toyota Rav-4 had about 30 holes or dents from BB pellets in the windows and vehicle body, with the damage totaling $5,000. A 2011 Chevy Cruze had about three BB holes in its windshield, for damage totaling $500.

OSU basketball coach Mike Boynton dismissed the three players from the team Jan. 16, 15 days after the reported incident.

“These days aren’t fun,” Boynton said then. “Certainly I care a great deal about these young men and I want to see them all have success. We try to push them and we try to talk about things that are really relevant to life and give them a chance. They don’t always necessarily make great decisions. When they don’t, there’s consequences to that.”

Weathers, a redshirt sophomore, missed the first game of the Cowboys’ season after returning from a two-month suspension after stealing a woman’s wallet at a Stillwater bar in September. He pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of knowingly concealing stolen property Nov. 6.

Jones and Calloo were both freshmen. Although Calloo had no prior publicly known issues, Jones had been suspended from nine of the previous 10 game before his suspension.

Since the dismissals, the Cowboys have played with only seven scholarship players and gone 2-10.
