Top recruit chooses OSU
STILLWATER — Cade Cunningham is coming to Oklahoma State.
On the eve of OSU's basketball season opener, the Cowboys got a huge gift. The nation’s top 2020 guard and No. 2 overall prospect announced his commitment.
“I thank God for blessing me with this opportunity and those close to me for their love and support during this journey,” Cunningham said in a video posted to his Twitter page. “I loved all the schools I visited, I appreciate each program investing their time and energy into me.
“To be honest, I was this close to picking a different school. But blood is always thicker than water. Go Pokes.”
Cunningham unzipped a jacket to reveal an orange shirt with the words “Orange Power” across his chest.
A five-star 6-foot-6, 215-pound combo guard, Cunningham is regarded by many as the top guard in this year’s class. He’s the second guard to commit to OSU in less than a week. Putnam West's Rondel Walker, a four-star recruit, committed last week.
And Cunningham might not be the last domino.
Five-star guard Bryce Thompson, a Tulsa Washington star, has the Cowboys in his final four and will be in attendance Wednesday night. He is expected to announce his decision on Tuesday. After Cunningham's commitment, he tweeted, "well that changes things."
Naturally, Walker followed with his recruiting pitch, an eyeball emoji followed by an orange.
The Cowboys also remain high on four-star Georgia power forward J.T. Thor.
Cunningham was the top priority for OSU coach Mike Boynton, who was the first power conference coach to offer a scholarship to Cunningham.
Boynton celebrated appropriately on Twitter when news broke, too.
“Mr. Pickens once told me that ANYTHING is possible at Oklahoma State,” Boynton tweeted while showing a video of him leaving a staff meeting to celebrate in the middle of Gallagher-Iba Arena. “Thanks again for your vision, sir.”
Boynton also hired Cunningham’s older brother, Cannen, as an assistant coach this offseason. His presence ultimately won out.
