Boynton envisions Cunningham as ‘terrific’ long-term coach

Mike Boynton recognizes that people have made assumptions about his recent hire, but he is focused on the big picture.

In late June, Boynton announced the addition of Cannen Cunningham to the Oklahoma State men’s basketball coaching staff.

Although Cunningham, 26, is the brother of Cade Cunningham, a five-star 2020 recruit on OSU’s radar, Boynton isn’t directing all his attention toward one player. Cunningham has multiple connections in the DFW area, an OSU recruiting hotbed.

“I know there’s a perception about the short term, but I’m talking longterm, I think he’s gonna be a terrific coach,” Boynton said.

During the previous year, Cannen Cunningham, a former SMU center, was Tulane’s associate director of video operations. He also has AAU coaching experience. Boynton, who earned his first head coaching job at OSU, isn’t afraid to give a young coach a chance.

“... He knows what a good player looks like,” Boynton said. “He was one himself. He knows how to help develop players, and he has an eye for talent and can relate to people.”

The new big man

Hidde Roessink’s campus visit involved plenty of pizza and 3-pointers.

Roessink, a 6-foot-10 combo forward from The Netherlands, signed with the Cowboys on June 26. Boynton noticed Roessink’s height when he watched him on film, but he took a closer look at his skills when Roessink, a freshman, visited OSU.

First, Roessink scarfed down his share of Stillwater food.

“I think we took him to Hideaway in the first three hours, and we ate like 8,000 calories of pizza,” Boynton said. “And then we came over here, and in like 30 minutes, the schedule said he was supposed to work out.”

Although Roessink didn’t have much time to rest, the heavy meal didn’t hinder him.

“He shot like 90 percent from 3,” Boynton said. “I was like, ‘We can’t let that kid leave campus without signing here.’”

Boynton described Roessink as a smart player and said he can boost the Cowboys’ versatility on offense and defense. With Roessink’s signing, only one scholarship spot is open for the coming season.

Cowboys announce nonconference schedule

Boynton doesn’t wait until the start of Big 12 play to challenge his team.

The Cowboys announced their 2019-20 non-conference schedule on Thursday morning. KenPom listed OSU as No. 5 in strength of schedule during the previous season, and Boynton has assembled another list of tough matchups. The Cowboys will face eight non-conference teams that ranked in the KenPom top 100 at the end of the past season and five that made the NCAA Tournament.

OSU will start the season Nov. 6 against in-state foe Oral Roberts at Gallagher-Iba Arena. Seven of the 12 nonconference games are in Stillwater.

Boynton will travel to his home city of Brooklyn, New York, for the NIT Season Tip-Off. There, the Cowboys will face Syracuse on Nov. 27 and either Penn State or Ole Miss two days later.

OSU will take on Charleston, Houston and Minnesota for the second straight season. The Cowboys and Minnesota will meet in the BOK Center in Tulsa. Other non-conference opponents include Yale, Georgetown and Wichita State.
