This has been known for some time but I saw that tail specimen the other day. Amazing stuff. Shame no genetic material remains.

And if you never realized it, read more here:

The Origin of Birds

"The scientific consensus is that birds are a group of theropod dinosaurs that evolved during the Mesozoic Era. A close relationship between birds and dinosaurs was first proposed in the nineteenth century after the discovery of the primitive bird Archaeopteryx in Germany."

@Been Jammin

Birds are true dinosaurs. They are the only branch that survived the extinction event. But yes all birds you see today are dinosaurs. Which I think is pretty cool.

I can buy that. However, that does not equate to ...."dinosaurs were birds"

You might believe that humans evolved from apes, but would not say "apes were humans".

So theropods are related to birds.

That makes sense. Maybe T-Rex had some rad arm feathers to compensate.

What about the four legged dinosaurs?

Uh yes. Birds are dinosaurs. They were then, they are now.

Truly modern birds appeared emerged 100 million years ago, way before the massive extinction which wiped out the dinosaurs. While they were never really on top of the food chain, they are the only branch of dinosaurs to survive past the Cretaceous (if you haven’t already, get used to the idea: birds are dinosaurs).

Remember dinosaurs lived and evolved over several hundred million years prior to the Extinction event. T-Rexes as an example did not evolve until late in the dinosaur era, yet the different types 150 million years earlier are dinosaurs as well.

Birds are the only group to survive the extinction and have continued to evolve over the last 60 million years like they did the 100 million prior to that when they had more Dino company. The birds today are true dinosaurs. And I think that's fascinating.
