The reason they don't know is because they've engineered this virus to mutate more effectively than most viruses. Most viruses lose function as they mutate and become weaker. Its why flu season ends every year and doesn't go year round. Covid however, has been amazingly resilient to such mutations and as shown by the Delta Variant, UK Variant, and South African Variant, seems to gain function (becomes more contagious and potentially more deadly) with each mutation.
