Well, he did specifically note that he could not tell if they were lawmen. I took that as implying only law enforcement should be allowed to open-carry.

let me spell it out for you. he's not going to come out and say what he can infer and get his twitter followers to say for him. he made an (probably false) observation which had no point other than to draw attention to the inferred backwards flyover culture that allows such anachronisms as free men with guns on their hips.
Spot on. I used to work in NYC among the pretentious, east coast liberal elitist crowd. They have open disdain for the vast majority of white people in this country and view them as backwards hicks.

Personally, it was an observation. Defensive types might try to make it into something more.
Or people with a different perspective than you. Given the broader context surrounding Rather, politics as a part of every single thing in modern times, and his choice of phrasing, I don't see where "defensive types" is that accurate.
Also, there's simply no need to label, if you're attempting to have an amiable conversation. Labeling is a symptom of ineffective listening or simple apathy.

Serious point: remove Dan Rather and ask 10 friends to ascribe motivation to that comment - curious what you would get. With such a neutral comment, the bias of the viewer is pretty much the deciding factor in how you view it. My bias obviously shows as well...
