Coger
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State basketball coach Brad Underwood has announced the signing of power forward Tyrek Coger, who will suit up for the Cowboys for the 2016-17 season.
Coger (6-9, 240, Cape Fear CC, Raleigh, N.C.) is listed as the No. 21 junior college prospect in the country according to 247Sports.com. Last season, he averaged 12.2 points on 52.6 percent shooting and 7.0 rebounds per game.
“We’re very excited that Tyrek will be joining the Cowboy family,” Underwood said. “He’s the type of player that can be physically imposing, but he’s also a guy that brings a great deal of experience to the locker room. He’s a great rebounder with a crafty touch around the basket, but he can also step back a knock down a 15-foot jumper. Tyrek is also a pretty good passer. Most importantly, he provides some much-needed physicality in the paint, which will make us a better basketball team.”
He posted 22 double-digit scoring performances, including a season-best 23-point outing against Port City Prep. Coger tallied eight double-doubles as a sophomore with a high of 14 boards against Richard Bland College. He also blocked 28 shots and posted 29 assists on the year.
Coger played his freshman season at Eastern Florida State, where he shot 48.2 percent from the floor and averaged 4.4 points and 2.9 rebounds per game in just 4.2 minutes of action per game.
In high school, Coger was a four-star recruit out of Word of God Christian Academy in Raleigh, N.C. In his final year at Word of God, Tyrek was named All-Conference, All-State and Most Outstanding Player of the OT Holiday Invitational Tournament, while averaging 16 points and eight rebounds per game during.
As a senior, Coger scored 23 points and grabbed nine rebounds in the state semifinal game, then tallied 17 points and eight rebounds to lead Raleigh Word of God to the 58-53 win in the title game to earn state tournament MVP honors.
