Some coaching changes:

Tim Flynn to WVU
Damion Hahn to SDSU
Chris Bono to Wisconsin
Angel Escobedo takes over at Indiana
Sean Bormet takes over at Michigan

Without knowing too much those seem like great moves for the Big 12. Obviously you hate to see Bono out of the conference but Hahn seems like a good replacement. From the little I know Flynn seems like a solid coach. WVU can't get much worse.

I think the Flynn hire was a great hire. Strong reputation in fertile recruiting grounds a guy who has had a bunch of success at a program that isn't easy to do so.

Hahn has a similar profile but lacks he HC chops. Agree that it seems like a good hire for SDSU.

We might start seeing some improvement in the Big 12 which would be great for OSU. You've got to hope Hahn can at least keep Bono's momentum going. I think Dresser is a good coach and will get Iowa State better. WVU should be on the way up. OU literally can't be worse.

Man I hope! On paper OU and especially ISU hit home runs with recent hires. We need both of those programs back cometping for conference title and top 15 NCAA finishes. Wyoming, NIU, SDSU and WVU should all continue to improve.

That happens and it will be very benificial for OSU.

First post but I do lurk here....

I honestly thought based on the title of this thread one of you was about to suggest JS be replaced. Thank god y’all know better.

I am a Rutgers fan. First compliments on this board. Not a ton of vitiorol on here towards other programs. Y’all seem to keep it about you for the most part.

I met that fix fellow at beat the streets a few years back and he had a very positive vibe to him so I started following him and OSU. I like good wrestling and our sport doesn’t have a ton of quality outlets so boards are my go to.

Anyways...

1) on the rise of the big ten, I think OSU needs to seek out more diverse competition. Studs (and yes, your lineup is almost always a 8-10 AA threat and thus loaded with studs) are beating weaker competition in b12 and then get to nationals less prepared for the hostility. Sending guys to scuffle, Reno, and maybe even a few to midlands might get guys in a different zone for March?

2) $$$/recruiting— it’s a tough sell to recruit right now since I think I heard JS say once that OSU guys on the national team is his bar of success for the program. Nebraska, Iowa, tOSU and PSU are repped on the national team so the elite recruits may be seeking out those programs (which is silly since JOhn smith is the second best American wrestler of all time <me being first. Just seeing if you’re paying attention>. A quality Olympic training center will be necessary and I hope y’all find funds for it.

3) next year and beyond— I think GFeller is a wild card... I’ve seen him wrestle flat out stupid and wrestle like a world beater. Fix should be in the national title convo from day 1... I think you’re back in the trophy hunt next year and title hunt in two years.

4) I always thought OSU was the “we cut way too much weight here” program, not the “party program”. I have a friend who I wrestled clubs with when we were kids and he won a few national titles for you guys (will remain nameless out of respect) and he told me JS was the first guy he wanted a beer with when he turned 21 and the last guy he would want knowing he had a beer.

Anyways, thanks for a clean board!

Welcome, and good post. I read the Rutgers' board a little bit last summer when the Suriano transfer was being discussed. Seemed like you guys were under siege from another interested fan base at that time.;) Anyway, I got the impression there were plenty of civil & knowledgeable Rutgers' posters, so props to you as well.

Regarding your first point, OSU's schedule is normally pretty competitive with the Scuffle, Reno, Iowa, Missouri, Minnesota, etc. This year was a little odd because of the Italy trip. But I would like to see us try out the Cliff Keen Invite in Vegas sometime rather than the Scuffle.

Glad to see Ashnault got a 6th year, he should be right in the mix at 149 next year.

Thanks. What I meant by seek competition was possibly divide up the team. For example, Fix (had he wrestled that weekend... I think he was sick?) may have been better off going to Midlands than Scuffle (he would see SUriano and Lee at Midlands. He wouldn't see the same caliber guys at Scuffle). Then send Gfeller to Scuffle. i.e. split up the squad for these tournaments.

Wrestling's a weird sport.... your 157 pounder can have the toughest schedule in the country, and your 125 pounder have a cakewalk all year even though they wrestled the same teams in duals. I would think midseason tournaments can give guys a gauge against who they may see in March if they go seek out the guys in their weights and ignore the team score In December. Does anyone care what team wins scuffle or midlands?

I follow you. But I think teams need to pick their spots and adjust where it's practical and makes sense. A few months ago I had a discussion with another poster about using the Midlands to determine our starter at 149. He correctly pointed out that the Midlands needs to accept you, so it might not have been an option anyway. In your example, we would have sent Daton to the Midlands (he would have been accepted) and Kaden to the Scuffle. The issue with that is, as redshirts paying their own way, they wouldn't have been able to split the travel and room expenses. Plus Daton's dad Derek corners both of them. Aside from added expense, splitting up the team and coaches (camaraderie), and removing one less competition date from the schedule, could it be done? Hypothetically, could a team send their 125-157 to the Cliff Keen Invite and 165-285 to the Scuffle? Would those tournaments want arrangements with teams like that? I really don't know, but it's an interesting idea.

They announced that Moore and Port were going to WV with Flynn. New commitment from administration? Hopefully WV becomes competitive.

Some coaching changes:

Tim Flynn to WVU
Damion Hahn to SDSU
Chris Bono to Wisconsin
Angel Escobedo takes over at Indiana
Sean Bormet takes over at Michigan

As a fan of the undefeated regular season Big 12 Champion Jackrabbits ;) Hahn was the only name mentioned that excited me of the names I heard mentioned. Assistant Coach will be named within a couple weeks. Wouldn't give me name, was told is a good addition as well.

Zeke Jordan has been named assistant coach for Indiana. It's a good move for him, I wish him well.

I'd like to see us bring in an upper weight as the volunteer coach. Someone like an Austin Schafer, who could roll around with Derek & Preston this year and then Daniel Kerkvliet next year.

It's been a few months, anyone hearing anything on the volunteer coach position?

I know it doesn't pay a whole lot - last year when the staff changes were announced, John said something like Chris could have made 5x more $ if he had left.

I threw out Derek White as a possibility for next year (cbond?). But what about this year, maybe Nolan Boyd?

Think Nolan is still in Dental school...

OSU had a terrible NCAA tournament last year but the season was pretty good. Not our best but definitely looked like we could be in the top four prior to Cleveland. The two previous years we were 3rd and 2nd in the NCAA. I’m looking at Cleveland as a fluke and thinking that we will be back in the mix this year in Pittsburgh.
