Natural gas has probably done more to lower the carbon footprint of our nation than any other green idea in history, yet environmentalists absolutely hate it.

The counter to that is the increased methane emmissions. Methane is about 20 times more potent as a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide. The benefit is that methane has a shorter time before it is degraded than carbon dioxide.
