Figured it wouldn't be long for him after Barbara passed. Youngest navel aviator in WWII and flew 58 (yes 58) combat missions in a freakin torpedo bombers (ended up being shot down in a TBF Avenger) which was about the worst duty one could draw with respect to flying single engine planers in WWII. So many great accolades to lay at this guys feet....RIP Sir.

"Flyboys" by James Bradley tells the story of the nine Navy/Marine airmen that were shot down while bombing the communications towers on Chichi Jima; eight were captured and "disappeared", one was miraculously rescued by a U.S. Navy submarine. Interesting read.

They didn’t disappear, they were tortured, summarily executed and some eaten by the Japanese officers on the island. A crime for which the Japanese commander and at least one other was executed after the war.

This plus numerous other atrocities is why I’ll never I’ll get upset about raising ambient to over 2000 F in Nagasaki and Hiroshima.
