Though it could still be argued that the war was a mistake ... there is no mistaking that there were WMDs in Iraq.

Woodward makes a great point that I think has been Obama's biggest mistake in Iraq.

As for President Barack Obama's decision to leave no residual force behind when American troops left Iraq in December 2011, Woodward indicated it would have been better to have left 10,000-15,000 troops behind as "an insurance policy" as military commanders suggested.

"We have 30,000 troops or more in South Korea still, 65 years or so after the war," Woodward said. "When you’re a superpower, you have to buy these insurance policies, and he didn’t in this case. I don’t think you can say everything is because of that decision — but clearly a factor."

Prepare for a tirade from a guy who knows far less about the subject than Woodward does and who isn't nearly as objective.

Of course Saddam had WMDs, we gave them to him in the 80s.

He was an asshole, but he wasn't a threat to anyone. Biggest foreign policy blunder in U.S. History.

I think the main thesis of this thread is that Bush didn't lie because liberal Bob Woodward said he didn't. The liberal part is important because, "Bush didn't lie because neocon Bob Woodward said he didn't" doesn't have the same ring to it.

Fish in a barrel here.

The Iraq collective wisdom is so entrenched in the national fabric that if someone outside of the neocon bubble actually defends Dumbya, it goes national and even gets its own thread here. It's the equivalent of a conservative screaming in 1975 that we should still be hammering it out in Vietnam.

It's this generation's Vietnam, and ironically the Vietnam generation (the ones that evaded the war, anyhow) made many of the same mistakes that were made in the '60's.

Dumbya didn't lie about jack squat. Spent the better part of a year touring the country selling the plan. Congress signed off on it. End of story. Mistake? You bet. Did he lie? Nope. Get over your hatred for the man. He hasn't been President for quite awhile now. Just pisses ol syssy off to no end that Dumbya is smarter than him. Hahahahahaha!

The whole damn mess in Iraq wouldn't have ever happened if Bush1 finishes that march toward Baghdad in Desert Storm. But he was too concerned with keeping that to the "100 day war". The Republican Guard was apparently in shambles and fleeing at will. Totally sad that the collective IQ of the entire Bush family is under triple digits.

And BW has an obvious agenda, no??

Yep. Bush was an idiot for invading and Obama doubled down on the stupidity by leaving Iraq in a haphazard fashion.

No. I was pointing out to JV the importance of your characterization of Woodward as a liberal. He is not a liberal.

So, when he periodically jumps off the liberal plantation -- he's no longer a liberal?

Got it.

The liberal mantra is to unfairly attack the opposition even if untrue and always defend the liberal in office -- it doesn't matter whether he's right or wrong. Am I correct?

(And yes, I realize there are scores of pseudo-conservative caricatures like Sean Hannity that fit the same profile.)

YOU are the one who called him liberal. Why?

Bush I is a good man and was a great president. He didn't "finish that march towards Baghdad" because he understood the power balance in the Mideast and what toppling Saddam would do (increasing Iran's influence, leaving a power vacuum for groups like ISIS to emerge). He did the right thing.

Bush 1 did exactly what the Saudis told him to do. Why did he attack Saddam Hussein to begin with?

I agree GHWB is a good man. In what way was he a great President?

Even if attacking/invading Iraq was a mistake in 2002, that doesn't mean you compound it by squandering everything you had fought for (and men died for) and gained just to score poltiical points. As recently as 2010, Obama and Biden were both touting what a great success Iraq was.

Bush1 and Bush2 may very well have been nice, likeable men. But given their actions, neither was terribly intelligent and both were apparently easily manipulated. If the Saudis influenced Bush1, we can almost certainly agree that Dick Cheney called the shots for Bush2. Calling the shots while ultimately making the second Iraq War a financial boon for Cheney's Halliburton. The same Halliburton that gained the most, financially, from that conflict. How Cheney avoided criminal prosecution is quite the mystery.
There should be a special place in hell when Dick Cheney dies!

Why the hate for Bush 1? If not for the recession or Ross Perot the Clintons would have been relegated to the footnotes of history.

As an aside, how did Ross Perot get 20% of the popular vote? I was in jr high at the time but he seems like a borderline nutcase. His VP candidate was completely unprepared. He quit and then got back in the race...still got 20%.

Come on Mitchl, I'm no Bush fan....either of them, but W was a jet fighter pilot so to say he's not very bright is asinine. And if he was so dam dumb how did he get all those brilliant dems/liberals to follow along? Just amazing how the idiot president can lie (you can keep your doctor) and lie and people continue to slip their knee pads on and cover for him.

Cripes, your screed smells like recycled turds from MSNBC bowl flushings. How many years are you behind reality? Thanks for playing the fool and throwing out the "straw man" in an attempt to divert attention from the incompetent, jack-off-idiot you so idolize.

Welcome to the board, Mitch! JimmyBob is a typical conservative voice on here.

Mitch has been on here before regurgitating msnbc and huffpo talking points like the rest of you sheep.

Didn't he donate his Halliburton money to charity?

Interesting question - Which is worse, deliberately lying to get us into war or being too dumb to stop your subordinates from lying to get us into war?

Which is worse, a Dem leadership, hell bent on being the opposition, being dumb enough to believe a lie or being dishonest enough to go along without even getting a cash reward?
