“Dole has been coming for years — weather and his health permitting — to greet these groups of aging veterans, brought at no cost from throughout the country by the nonprofit Honor Flight Network. As the many missions of a mission-driven life have faded into history — combat hero, champion for the disabled, Senate majority leader, 1996 Republican presidential candidate — this final calling has remained, down to just Saturdays, sometimes derailed by the doctors, but still a duty to be fulfilled.

“It’s just about the one public service left that I’m doing,” he says. “We don’t have many of the World War II vets left. It’s important to me.”

I have the honor of going to what might be the final reunion of The Fighting Men of Metz (95th Infantry Division) in Pennsylvania this summer. My wife and I serve on their association board (me= civilian/family support group rep, my wife = retired military rep).

Every time I have gotten to hang out with these guys it has been enlightening and ennobling. There are still a couple of them that call me over and ask for a swig from my flask of whiskey they all know I’m carrying. Some of them have to do it on the sly and hide it from their care-givers. Lol. Kinda cool that I have a reputation as a source of free whiskey among these men of the Greatest Generation. Haha.
